No, it was the mercury used in the stretching process in shaping felt hats on a form.

I've noticed this about Freddie before, he says something with great confidence and people seem to accept it as fact. Bea does the same.... "the Queen's husband is dead" for example!!!

The_Long_Run, that is an entirely loaded question you just asked. The answer is None, Zero, Not One.

However, I don't know any hat makers so it was obviously going to be 0.

Do you by any chance live in a huge hat making area?

We all make mistakes.

Who cares, really? I mean he was right in that it was poisoning caused by a metal. I'm sure YOU have never gotten two things confused, right?

I should have also said that I am amused by some of the people on this thread acting like they knew ANYTHING about how hats were made in the mid-19th century. I bet not a single one of you knew ****** all about it and either just agreed with someone here or googled it. So stop being so smug.

As a reuglar time traveller I knew this fact, I knew it when I was brushing my teeth with urainiun toothpaste, eating some lovely offal (which you just can't buy anymore) and enjoying some lovely over the counter morphine. And I know it now.

Great days.

Nah, obviously had no knowledge of it at all. Everything in olden times was dangerous. Nowadays we just live longer and die in a home without soul and love.

But you see what I mean, don't you? And it isn't just related to Freddie either. People pounce on stuff like they ******ing knew anything about it before they googled it. IF they even bothered to google it. I mean seriously... wtf?

Yeah I agree with you, we all have bits of useless info in our heads (and often no doubt we remember incorrectly) but I'm amazed at how many threads start up over the weirdest things.

There are some that should be shocking, Jade's East Anglia, is an obvious example, but there have been some strange ones jumped upon (and agree not just tonight).

I must say though that if the forumers did genuinely know about it, I can't wait to start a general discussion thread about the years Beat Icon Neal Cassady was in San Quentin Jail, as the people on here are very knowledgable about so much. It will be a joyus occassion.

Now now Cybele dont be such a tard, Fud and Bitch may have been to university that doesnt mean they know diddly, except how to write facts or theories down and regurgitate them using books or the internet to prove their point.

Some people do know a lot of wierd and wonderful facts, hell thats why Trivial pursuits (you heard about it?) was invented. Go down your local pub maybe they have a pub quiz on.(incidentally the mad as a hatter thing is a question in one of the TP games.)

If he didnt want to have stuff picked up. maybe he should shut up spouting and pretending to be the font of wisdom he clearly isnt.

Thats harsh, they are in the BB house and as such everything will be picked up on, especially things that BB will know get forums going, they have been in there for what 8 weeks now? Are you seriously going to say that in two months you won't say anything thats wrong, remotely stupid, partially correct or just completely stupid? We all do, we get words jumbled up (don't forget he is dyslexic, he might have trouble with some words and getting confused).

your totally right the_long_run.it was mercury, from the felt making process.i saw a programme with that funny brummie bloke from the fast show.on there they said it was from the urine, contaminated with mercury.pissing on the felt was part of the process or something.the wee was contaminated due to people taking mercury for syphillis(i think).then when they put their hands in the mix,it got into their systems and sent them all ****ing loopy.
