Default George Best

What a shame seeinghim the way he is. What a nice looking guy and a great footballer in his younger days.

I do hope he gets better. He was simply one of the greatest sportsmen ever.

BUT....its hard to feel much sympathy for him after the way he has carried on drinking with the new liver. This liver was a gift of life for him and he has abused this priveledge. What if someone else has died because they didnt get that transplant?

A person died before he could have that liver, and that family must feel betrayed, if they know.

Did everyone read todays paper? it was horrible to see him lying there and then a picture of him at the bottom when he was younger and playing football. I think everyone is getting prepared for the worst especially after reading his comments, hes not going to last much longer which is a huge shame because hes an overall nice bloke. Its even more weird because he was only on sky sports for the saturday afternoon results 6 months ago, now look at him.

GEORGE BEST - Legend

I don't mean to sound insensitive, but he brought his ill-health upon himself by abusing his body for years, and I find it difficult to sympathise with situations like this.

I know they are celebs, and we don't really know them, but I don't feel touched by George's plight at all.

I feel more touched by things like Caron Keating's story. A young woman with 2 small children dying of Cancer at age 41, having done nothing to bring it upon herself.

I just can't feel compassion for a man like George Best who has had a very priveliged life, and has spent the majority of his fortune on Alcohol, resulting in extremely ill-health now.

Sorry if that offends anyone, but it's just how I feel.

It's a pity that others cant learn from George's mistakes.

Nobody can take away from him the things he achieved in sport back in the day. Others should watch and learn, and not make the same mistakes he has made since. It's all too easy for the rich & famous to fall into the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol. Most of them dont even make it to George's age. I'm shocked the guy has lasted this long to be honest.

I agree with everything Stropz said. I don't wish ill health on anyone, and hope George pulls through, but his ill health is a result of his own doing.

Yeah Ruth. And, I hope nobody misconstrues my remarks, and thinks I'm wishing ill-health upon him. That's not the case.

No, I agree with you all, it is self inflicted. It's also a disease though. Alcoholics usually leave a legacy of waste and misery to their nearest and dearest.

He was an early casualty of being a very naive young lad suddenly being told he was amazing and fantastic, lots of money (nothing like today though) women throwing themselves at him etc. Basically he was a kid in a sweet shop.

Terrible to see his decline I agree. I saw him playing live at Nottingham Forest in 1968. We beat Man U 2-1 -those were the days! We all treated him like a popstar. We were right at the front of the crowd, and he leant on the flimsy boarding in front of us to adjust his shoe. He was stunningly good looking, fantastic eyes. My friend fainted when he winked at us! Oh, and as for the football well, he was magnificent. Poetry in motion.

I would be very surprised if he pulls through this time.

It is self induced but he is getting the best help money can get him.

Think of the family of the deceased person who donated the liver- seeing it being abused is disgusting.

Professor Roger Williams has revealed the sad news that George Best's hours are now numbered, although he is still alive.

One of the greatest footballers of all time is on his deathbed at the age of 59, unable to recover from internal bleeding that has now affected his lungs.

"I think many of you already know this morning that I'm afraid Mr Best is coming to the end of the long road of his ill health," said Williams, Best's physician.

"The situation is medically the intensive care team and everybody concerned have managed to cope with pretty well all the complications except the one that's happened again during the night which you know about. This bleeding which, although has been replaced, has now affected the lungs and other parts.

"There is really no return from that situation. It's just not possible to recover from that episode that he's had during the night and is now faced with.

"He is still alive, still having standard medical care and treatment but I have to tell you that his hours are numbered now. It's all very upsetting for all of us who have looked after him.

"I can't be precise as to time but it is the final stages of the illness and I'm afraid he could die at any time over the next 24 hours," said Williams. "I'd be very surprised if he survives another 24 hours."

Williams revealed the star's family, including son Callum, were in attendance and preparing themselves for the inevitable.

"I think they accept what is going to happen," he explained.

"He's not in any pain but he is still alive, though with complications in the lung that one is never able to reverse when that happens.

"He's not conscious or aware [of his family's presence].

"I think we're all very upset."

If he was a 'normal', non famous person without the money, nobody would care. He would probably be living in a bedsit somewhere.

God bless him.

Imagine if George Best died on the day 24 hour licensing came into place?

Irony at it's sharpest.
