Default No \'Celebrity Big Brother\' on C4 in 2008

Quote:
Channel 4 director of programmes Julian Bellamy just announced that there will be no Celebrity Big Brother on the main channel in 2008.

A process of "creative renewal" was cited; close to 30 hours of 9pm slots will be freed up as a result. Kevin Lygo, director of television and content, also cited a desire to "rest" the series due to a feeling of it having "never left our screens" in the wake of the Shilpa race row.

An experimental version of Big Brother will air in January - solely on E4, and a decision as to whether CBB will return in 2009 will be made next year.

I had a feeling something like this would happen. I'm not really that bothered. "An experimental version of Big Brother" sounds interesting - maybe a sign that they are finally going to change the format of the show.

I'm sure an All-Stars version would be on C4 - it's probably something not too dissimilar to Teen Big Brother, which was awful.

And so we finally reach the beginning of the end

Sounds like BB All Stars may be well and truly happening. Or maybe another sort of teen version. There's not many other things I could think of which could be 'experimental'.

I'm with you on that one CathalOS, I mean, Paris has supposed to have been offered a bundle of cash to appear in Celebrity Big Brother 6 and now courtesy of Dig.spy, they say that it will be 2009 until the next show, maybe??? Oh dear....? Haven't we heard all this before? More spin from the rumour merchants. I would wait a while on this report and let us hope that it is not true.

I would say personally, that the idea of a January Celebrity Big Brother is not the case and instead of that, there will be this E4 show, but beyond that, maybe a late-in-the-year Celebrity Big Brother? That sounds more plausable. It is a shame for Big Brother fans, as we have just been given some sad news and I was looking forward to talking about the next Celebrity Big Brother, as I love them, even though they are pretty short in comparison, which I don't really mind, as Big Brother 8 this year has been quite a drag for most of us and things just went wrong.

Anyway, I am sure that the show will go on in some shape or form, and if we have to put up with this E4 thing, then so-be-it?

CBB was never exactly confirmed. After CBB5 one of the boffins up at C4 said "I don't see why we shouldn't bring it back" which kind of led people onto believe it would 100% be coming back. Paris Hilton was only ever in talks according to The Sun - and it was more then likely a stunt to get more people interested in the show, I mean we hardly ever get rumors that early.

I have been telling people for weeks now not to hold their breath as NOTHING was ever set in stone.

Its a good move by Channel 4 - no two ways about it. They know they need to give the show a bit of a rest to make it feel fresh again - and now we have an experiment to look foward to - not a list of rubbish 'celebritys'.

No Celebrity Big Brother next year

Robin Parker - 11:00am

Celebrity Big Brother will not return next year following the race row and as part of a shake-up of Channel 4's 9pm weeknight slot that will also see a cull of several factual entertainment shows.

C4 has axed You Are What You Eat, Brat Camp, It's Me Or The Dog and Selling Homes Abroad as part of the shake-up of the schedule to make way for new shows.

Already confirmed for the slot in January is a fly-on-the-wall documentary series from Firefly with the working title The Family in an echo of Paul Watson's iconic 1970s series. A family will have cameras installed throughout their home to document every aspect of their lives.

C4 has also extended Cutting Edge's run in the slot from 16 this year, split into two eight-part runs, to at least 20 and up to 30.

In a tacit admission of how the media storm over Jade Goody's behaviour in this year's Celebrity Big Brother overshadowed the regular version, head of C4 Julian Bellamy said he wanted to create "more anticipation" for the show's non- celebrity ninth season, due next summer.

"After the race row, it was constantly in the press and part of the national conversation at a time when traditionally it was off our screens - it feels like it has never been away this year," he said.

C4 has now aired five seasons of the celebrity version, the most recent of which ran for three weeks. It previously skipped a year between Big Brother seasons four and five.

The channel will decide next year whether the celebrity version will return in 2009 or beyond.

"Resting Celebrity Big Brother will benefit the format in the longer term as it will have a bit of breathing space," Bellamy said.

He denied, however, that celebrities had been put off the show after this year's fracas. "People have been predicting that celebrities wouldn't want to go in the house after Les Dennis' experience in season two, but that's not been the case."

Bellamy admitted: "There is, however, a general issue of supply and demand and it's getting harder to book celebrities."

He said that ending some of C4's factual entertainment shows would lead a "creative renewal" of the channel.

"C4 should be constantly restless and that means clearing some space to try new things," he said.

I personally think it's a great move, it gives the show a little rest and maybe more hype for BB9 =O

Didn't bigbrotherin e-mail them last week asking for a BB all stars? and them saying they'd consider it? Perhaps they'll do an all stars on e4/channel 4.
