Man who knocked down house burglar acquitted

Here's an interesting story that was in the Irish news recently. A man who woke to find a burglar in his bedroom, chased him in his car and knocked him down. He's been acquitted of any crime but the burglar received €175k from the man insurance company. Thoughts?

Hmm, its a toughie, i dont condone vigilante behaviour...but then again i dont think the guy deserved the payout due to the circs.

Why is the burglar getting money at all..you decide to steal, then whatever happens to you is tough luck

Yeah, It's not technically reasonable force but you could surely plead temporary insanity after finding some strange man in your bedroom, with your 3 children in the house as well.

Yeah, it's sickening and apparently this guy lives quite near the man he burgled too, imagine him driving past him in his new BMW or something

He's now probably richer than the person which it happened too...

Rewarded for breaking the law basically

It's ****ty really, some of our laws need serious changing. I can't believe that it's only recently been changed that a person trespassing on your property can't claim off you if they're injured while doing it :bored:

The laws here have changed, i think it was because he used a car to do it haha

You would be in such a rage though, imagine waking up to find a man in your bedroom as you're sleeping  It's such a violation and the burglar never even got prosecuted for it in the end because of what happened after, which is an absolute disgrace if you ask me.

If someone was in your room in the middle of the night I think it's only natural for the first thought in your head to be ''wheres the nearest blunt object I can kill this guy with''

On your property you have a case, outside of it you dont.

Should be on a case by case basis though, I mean the burglar had ran out of his house with alot of his wifes expensive jewellery, he should be allowed use force to get his property back imo
