Alan Barnes: Mugging victim says donation will be 'put to good use'

A disabled man who was mugged outside his Tyneside home says he will put hundreds of thousands of pounds raised in online donations "to good use".

A fundraising campaign began after visually impaired Alan Barnes, 67, was attacked in Gateshead on 25 January.

Mr Barnes is now receiving financial advice on how to best use almost £300,000 raised so far.

Beautician Katie Cutler set up the Help Alan Barnes online donation page on Go Fund Me after learning of the attack.

The pair met for the first time on Sunday, when Mr Barnes, described Ms Cutler, 21, as a "wonderful girl."

The total raised passed £284,000 shortly after 09:00 GMT on Monday, by which time more than 21,700 donations had been made.

Mr Barnes said: "I've got a solicitor who has offered me some advice, so all the money will be put to good use. Katie is a wonderful girl. I didn't expect any of this but I'm very grateful."

Ms Cutler, who has a daughter, said meeting Mr Barnes was "magical." She said local tradesmen had also offered to help Mr Barnes.

She said: "A full kitchen has been offered, a conservatory, a bathroom. There's an electrician, a tiler - you name it... everything."

When Ms Cutler set up the fund for Mr Barnes, she said the intention was to raise £500 to buy him new home carpets and curtains.

Mr Barnes has lived with disabilities from birth after his mother contracted German measles when she was pregnant. His family said that the money raised would go into a trust fund for him.

No-one has yet been arrested over the attack.

It never ceases to amaze me how low some people are. Attacking a disabled man of that age. And, if you didn't know him you would think he was in his 80s or 90s because of how his condition affects his appearance. I'm glad he now has enough money to buy himself a new place. :)

This story I am pleased to see gets a happy ending. This too shows the good side of the British who will put their hands in their pockets to help someone.

Really despicable of the person that tried to mug him.

Loads of people I know know this guy. Horrible story, get some right dickheads round here like. Cant believe the fundraising has got so high though :o From what I heard it was meant to be to help him move house because he was too scared of his own house after the attack...well he could buy a house now instead of rent

Yeah, the girl who started the page said he would need funds to help him when he moves.. for new carpets, curtains etc... that's why she set it at £500. It's unbelievable that they have almost £300k now. It's nice to see something good happening to him after all he has endured.

Lovely ,heartwarming story this and lets not forget the young girl who made this happen, scumbags and cowards who do this kind of thing.

Poor man, i hope that money helps him feel safe, terribly difficult thing for an elderly person (or anyone really) to get over.

He should have given the donations to me

My facebook is going WILD with this at the minute. The girl who helped fundraise for him has been left with a big PR bill for it and he offered to pay a tenner and suggested she get the rest via donations.

Still bad what happened to him and that but what a selfish ****er.

Livia 16-09-2016 12:09 PM

Wow... some really bad press for a company purporting to specialise in PR.

More evidence that no good turn ever goes unpunished.

MTVN 16-09-2016 02:02 PM

Well if she did employ them and sign a contract then she does owe the money. It is selfish of him but to be devil's advocate you could say that people did donate money for him to use and not to be sent to some PR firm. Mind you didn't he also use the money to buy a house which he then sold at a big loss a few weeks after or something like that?

Vicky. 16-09-2016 02:19 PM

Yeah sold at a loss like 5 months after buying it :S

Currently selling second home and going back to renting

MTVN 16-09-2016 02:23 PM

Just realised I posted the story to it in this thread 4 posts above
