Prison System (Serious Debate)

Inspired by Kizwiz's prostitution thread

What do you think of the prison system? Is it doing it's job right? View on overcrowding? Solutions? Is the judicial system fair?

Yack away.

There are too many laws aimed at catching people who harm nobody but themselves, victimless crimes. unfortunately these crimes are easier to police than crimes where people are hurt by others.....

I don't know anything about it, but monday on the bus I heard a woman talking to her friend on the phone about it. She said something like "Did you hear about the overcrowding of prisions? It means ***** has less of a chance of going in for what he did."

I don't know what he did but he must have done something bad to even be in that situation. If they would start taking crimes seriously, and punishing people the right way, we wouldn't be in these situations.

I think the punishment should fit the crime. And I think that petty offenders should be made do community service thereby giving something back to the community.

If it's a serious offense, then they should be incarcerated for whatever number of years is appropriate to the offense.

I would bet that the prisons are overcrowded with petty criminals, who would be much more use to society doing some kind of community service to pay for their crimes.

That way, prison space could be better used to house the people who are a real danger to society.

Basically: We need more prisons.
It's to the point where people are being put in for a couple of years for murdering another human being, it's ridiculous.
Surely the Government can take a few billion out of their enormous pockets to fund more prisons being built without the extra luxury items such as TVs. Prison is meant to serve as a punishment - and people these days are losing sight of it.

The life sentence, what bollo-.... You get my drift. What a joke, if the judge is going to hand a sentence out, they should at least start with the intention of following through with that sentence.

And the loopholes! So many. It's easy to claim insanity and be completely absolved of any crimes you've committed, no matter how grisly. Most of these people are they let out back onto the streets to re-offend. Truly ridiculous.

You go Lauren

Just to add that in juvenille establishments (well the one I worked in) young offenders had to earn the privellige of being given a TV it was not a right!

The punishment that prisoners recieve is a restriction of their liberty, they do not go to prison to be punished if that makes sense.

I agree it should not be a life of luxury inside but we can not deny prisoners their rights as humans as well.

I do think that a full judicial review is overdue and a sentencing one should be done NOW. Often many prisoners only serve a quater of their sentence, how can that seem just to the vicitms.

My husbands aunt was quite brutually murdered many years ago, her murderer recieved "life" he was released after 18 years and within a week had murdered again, yet was released as rehabilitated! so should life be ilfe in prison?

Yeah, I agree that in some cases people are rewarded with privileges such as television access. But in child sex offenders prison centers they're fully kitted out already regardless of the prisoners behaviour - I don't see how they will effectively rehabilitate any of the criminals so that they can stop their vile behaviour before it claims another victim.

I hear what you are saying, I mean how do we know that they are in fact rehabilitated when they can so easily fool healthcare professionals.

I am all for rights etc.. but where are the rights of the victims when it comes to release, they are rarely considererd

They need to sort it out, thats all i really know about it. I don't really understand Law and Polotics and Shizz like that. I think they need to lock up people who do something really serious.

If there was 1 prison Cell left who would you pick to occupy it?????
Man in a pub brawl
Person who phone tapped into the royale phone line.
Drink driver with no insurance or licence.
Man downloading child porn over the internet.
