Conservative councillor suspended for offensive tweets over Eurovision vote

A Conservative councillor has been suspended for tweeting offensive comments about Irish people during the Eurovision Song Contest.
Nick Harrington, who also sits as a magistrate, was clearly moved to anger after the Irish judges failed to vote for UK entry Lucie Jones.
In his ire, he tweeted: "#Eurovision2017 thanks Ireland. You can keep your ********** gypsies! Hard border coming folks!"
Unsurprisingly his comments drew angry calls to the police and Warwick District Council - as well as a slew of remarks on his Twitter feed.
His Twitter account was deleted after the post, but not before it had been screen grabbed and shared across social media.
Warwick District Council leader Andrew Mobbs suspended Mr Warrington for six months pending a full investigation.
In a statement the council said: "We apologise unreservedly for the offence and upset that his comments have caused."
Police are also investigating the tweet sent from the councillor's account after complaints from members of the public.

I noticed quite a few people being confused at the concept of 'impartial' judges (impartial in inverted commas because Cyprus and Greece need to think about what they've done). Obviously an inappropriate thing to tweet, hope he gets suitably punished.

lol, they were twats for not voting for us, even australia gave us 12.

Someone has to be 20th? At least Ireland can't be accused of neighbour voting or would you rather they did that?

RichardG 14-05-2017 05:35 PM

british people always dismiss eurovision because it's political and neighbours vote for each other, then complain every time ireland doesn't give us 12 points lol

I dunno, I would have rated it higher because of how well she sung it... but when you think of the composistion, lyrics, and entertainment value of it all.. a 20th place from a few countries doesn't seem so out of place

RichardG 14-05-2017 05:41 PM

i wish we would go back to sending trash like scooch

eurovision was entertaining many years ago

He sounds like a really unbiased magistrate doesn't he?

The Eurovision is another European institution I'd like to leave. Shame we can't have a referendum on that.

We are as poor as the UK :hehe:

The UK has won 5 times, same as Sweden, its time to give other countries a shot at hosting, I don't know why the UK feels so hard done by :idc:

It was. I looked forward to it as a kid. I may pop in to see what's going on for about 5 minutes but soon switch over.

Cherie 14-05-2017 06:25 PM

When we sent Dustin the Turkey :flutter: it's taken way too seriously now

smudgie 14-05-2017 06:57 PM

Ouch, what an idiot.
Hopefully someone sees the error of their ways allowing the likes of him to be a magistrate, sack the beggar.:fist:

On a lighter note, we didn't come last:joker:
