Is this the end?

and I don’t want to hear ‘I hope not bc I want to be in it one day lolz!’
by putting your mind to it realistically, do you think BB18 (or the CBB after that - if there is one) will be the last? after cascading ratings and a contract expiry looming do you think Channel 5 will finally pull the plug, giving the format an opportunity to be tested and picked up by someone else or a permanent eviction of BB on UK screens?

speculate!

Mrmattybeck 18-01-2018 12:44 PM

Hopefully it needs a rest it’s done well to survive as long as it has after c4 originally axed it back in 2010

She's going :(

Cal. 18-01-2018 12:51 PM

I think it'll be off air for 2019. I can't see a channel being able to resist relaunching it with a 20th anniversary special in summer 2020. Whether that will do well, idk considering it wouldn't be much of a relaunch with the show only being off air for like 2 years.

Cal. 18-01-2018 12:52 PM

But saying that, defunct shows have anniversaries all the time without channels bringing them back. It could be off air for good after Channel 5 inevitably pulls the plug.

Nicky91 18-01-2018 12:53 PM

no

T* 18-01-2018 12:54 PM

it’s quite sad really but you just look back at C4 clips when it was at its peak and how good it used to be compared to how dry it is now it just needs to be rested at least because imagine how it might be if it’s still going for another 5 years :umm2: it’s a shame and it’s an even bigger shame how much the format has been mistreated over here

Ashley. 18-01-2018 12:55 PM

It definitely needs a rest.

Vicky. 18-01-2018 12:59 PM

I think c5 will keep it tbh, even with the lowering ratings the ratings are still decent for c5

RichardG 18-01-2018 01:04 PM

it's dead

this year will be the last, or next year if they decide to go for a final send-off cbb/bb all stars type ending

I think it’s a different case for BB because of its once massive popularity and the fact there is still potential for it which is ignored by C5 in favour of treating their viewers like idiots basically. There is a trend right now of bringing old shows back - e.g. Dancing on Ice, The Crystal Maze, etc. I believe there is still potential for C4 even to bring it back and actually revive it well (if they would or not is a different story, they may act snobby and see it as too low brow etc.) In theory they could rest it in 2019 and do the 20th anniversary thing, they’ll just have to try and sweep the C5 series’ under the carpet (like C5 basically did with C4 lol), focus on how it used to be, and promote it like crazy everywhere and promote it as a continuation of the original series and an actual revival, then it could actually be a massive success. Nostalgia sells.

That's a fair point. The campaign could be great with the old Eatock eye somehow advertising 20 years, the theme music and a date. Stick in a bit of Marcus and the majority of the old viewers who don't even realise it's still airing will be transported back to the 00s.

Yeah I don't know if Channel 5 would care enough to give it a send off but BB11 ended up being a success with it being the last series with 3 million viewers up on 2.5 million the previous summer so they might aim for that. I can't see the final civilian pulling in a great deal more viewers but an UBB2 could do well with the likes of Nikki, Tiffany Pollard, Gemma Collins, Steph Davis, Luisa Zissman etc.

RichardG 18-01-2018 01:12 PM

honestly tho the actual state of the show in a few years if c5 don't put it out of it's misery lol. 500k officials with rylan presenting the main evictions in front of a crowd of ten camera men pretending to be viewers.

Greg! 18-01-2018 01:14 PM

I thought I read they renewed it for a few more years :worry:

Greg! 18-01-2018 01:15 PM

It's needs to rest for a few years imo and come back (preferably on a different channel)

Exactly, theres millions and millions of viewers to win back

Oaker 18-01-2018 01:47 PM

If they axe it and revive it they need to wait for LI to have it's BB8 and die down otherwise it's pointless because it'll just be overshadowed again.

Jamie89 18-01-2018 07:19 PM

I don't think they'll do the axe and then revive it thing, or plan to rest it. I think they'll just keep going with it until it's no longer profitable for them.

The problem I see with the idea of resting it is that a lot of people who used to watch BB just don't care about it anymore, and haven't in probably about a decade. I don't really see why it going away and coming back again would make it more appealing to them since as far as they're concerned it already went away, whenever it was they stopped watching... resting it would only really be appealing to people like us who still watch it but feel it's getting tired, surely? I suppose they could go all out with marketing it as a huge comeback but I just don't see that as being too impactful unless it was off air for a good few years, and I don't think they really care enough about the franchise itself to lose a few years worth of revenue on the off chance that a comeback might boost ratings

Jason. 18-01-2018 07:20 PM

I wouldn't be against it being axed for good tbh.

It's been on air for two decades and the novelty wore off years ago. It can only go on for so long before they run out of ideas and start scraping the barrel and they already have.

Reality TV has changed massively since the mid-00s. Even if they were to rest it and bring it back in five years' time, it still wouldn't be the same as it was back in its heyday.

Exactly. Even when C5 re-launched it, the ratings were roughly the same as they were during the last year on C4. Granted, it had been less than a year since they'd gotten rid of it, but still. If they were to rest it and bring it back, the only people that would be interested in the revival are more or less the people that are still watching it now.

This Is The End - the sequel

Eddie. 19-01-2018 02:24 PM

C5 should axe BB, and let's just hope it's put to rest for 3-4 years, something like they did with BBAUS, and get hopefully C4 to revive it, and spend lots of money on promotion, so that ratings would be good, like BBAUS. The show is definitley tired, has been that way ever since 2007.

BigSister 19-01-2018 07:19 PM

I think they might axe the civilan series and just concentrate on the celebrity versions. In a way they are doing civilan series as a CBB.2 so wouldn't matter much if they pulled the plug on the civilian series Also as long as its still doing okish viewing figures for ch5 they will keep with it
