But is it his team mate that make him look good as he not done much in the world cup

Alf 22-06-2018 08:23 AM

Fantastic player. He and Ronaldo have been the best 2 players in the World for the past 10 to 15 years. But in terms of greatest of all time, then they both fall short.

bitontheslide 22-06-2018 08:42 AM

He is an excellent player, but he never delivers for his country. However, we could say the same about many players, it's not just him. Maybe the pressure of representing his country is just too much for him

same with our Robin Van Persie back when he played for our dutch team, he also flopped at national team, and he was great at the clubs he played

Messi and Ronaldo are up there with the best ever.

AnnieK 22-06-2018 10:58 AM

Messi is phenomenal. He doesn't get the same service from his national team mates as he does for Barca. He barely touched the ball in the first half - they just didn't get it to him to work his magic.

Alf 22-06-2018 11:09 AM

To answer the question in the title. Messi did seem to do better when Xavi and Iniesta in his prime where in the team, than he has in the past couple of years, in which Ronaldo has been better than him.

He’s one of the greatest ever. Just not the undisputed GOAT his fanboys would make you think.

Messi is a very good player, however he reminds me of Rooney a little bit where the Argentinian team puts so much pressure on him that he can't realistically achieve the goals all by himself, it was the same problem with Rooney with England where he was expected to score alot of our goals, and be apart of alot of our assists.

Basically Messi has unrealistic expectations thrown on him, and he has been one of the worst performing players at this World Cup due to not handling the pressure.

The comparison is quite apt here though, would you argue against the fact that both England and Argentina both put high expectations on Rooney and Messi during their World Cup experiences that are just too unrealistic to achieve?

I mean some fans have/were expecting Rooney and Messi to be scoring 25 goals during a World Cup campaign.

Rooney should still be playing for England and be at this World cup, just like Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta are.

I wouldn't have minded him being in the squad.

Rooney was never in the same league as the likes of Beckham who was a match winner in the same way that Ronaldo still is. Rooney couldn't even perform well for everton, so why would he be considered for the world cup squad.

Messi is a match winner, and still is, and therefore there is always the possibility that he will pull one out the hat. If he doesn't, that's life, but its not just him, there are 10 other players on the pitch.
