Bad Times at the El Royale (out this month)

From the same director (Drew Goddard) as Cabin in the Woods. Also wrote for Cloverfield, The Martian and World War Z. The cast is pretty great (Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm & Cynthia Erivo) and it looks interesting.

This is interesting me, it's very Tarantino-vibe imo. Might have to go see it.

I've been wanting to see this for a while (because I'm a sucker for retro American motel aesthetics and twisty noirs of the most basic variety), and while I have a pervasive feeling that it'll be... not great, I certainly won't pass on an opportunity to see Cynthia Erivo eat up a scene/have Chris Hemsworth's nips in my face for two hours

I saw this tonight and... actually liked it! Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo are both great, even if the film itself doesn't quite know how to end itself as satisfyingly as it could, and the use of music is really fun in a Baby Driver-y sort of way

Also I was sat directly behind two chiques who were gradually getting more and more off their tits on rosé as the film went on, to the point that they were trying to have conversations with the people on the screen and were getting increasingly frustrated that they weren't answering back, so they're in as good a position to review it as I am

Also also, I just checked the cast list and apparently Ron Swanson AND Jason Mendoza were in this film and nobody told me?

:joker::joker::joker: Nightmare!

Glad you liked it though! What's the general gist of it (NO SPOILERS PLZ)? Like I know the motel/hotel is divided into two sections and stuff but how does that correspond with the characters?

Essentially, it's Tarantino-esque neo-noir, meets a heist movie, meets a bit of Cabin in the Woods (it's the same director, after all), meets Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* meets that bit on BOTS where Rylan gets Kate Lawler to snoop around the camera runs and tell us what Zoe's been eating for breakfast (you'll see what I mean). In terms of the characterisation it does feel very "he/she's a [blank]... with a secret!", especially with the use of the state border running through the hotel and what that could mean in terms of how shady these people's intentions may be, but I think that the whole late '60s aesthetic, use of music, use of one setting, etc bring it to life and considering all the things it's trying to be at once, I think it works rather well

*I'm assuming, given that it's not out for another year :laugh:

oh and you'd best believe Cynthia Erivo can sang and she'd very much like you to know it
