Welcome to the Top Song of 2018. If you're not sure of what this whole thing is, here are a few links to competitions of previous years:


RULES (For the Regular Competition)
- For the early rounds, you may only vote for a maximum of two songs per artist. This game gets quite boring when dominated by stans. This'll become defunct in the later rounds when there most likely will only be one per artist remaining in the game.
- You must have 100 posts to participate. I'm not allowing multis :nono:
- Most rounds are just to vote for your favourites, but some will require 'negative' votes. These should be approached voluntarily rather than as mandatory, and members should only vote for songs they actively dislike rather than ones they don't like/might pick tactically.
- The final will consist of ten songs that're ranked by everyone on the basis of "10pts for the 1st place", "1pt for the 10th place" and so on.

Songs originally released prior to January 1 - either as a single, or on an album released before July 2016 - have been removed.
Also, songs that have appeared in previous editions of this game cannot count.
And finally, re-releases of songs don't count (sorry, Mariah Carey and everyone else with a Christmas song).
To save the list from becoming too repetitive, artists are restricted to just their 3 highest-charting songs. In the event of songs charting at the same place, only the song that charted first chronologically was included. This rule has only affected Post Malone, Eminem, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Drake, Cardi B and J. Cole.

So here's how it will work..

PRELIMINARY ROUND I've compiled a list of 186 songs below, picked from singles that:

• Made the top 15 of the UK Singles Chart
• Made the top 15 of the UK Singles SALES Chart
• Made the top 15 of the Billboard Hot 100
• Made the top 10 of the ARIA Top 50 Chart
• Made the top 10 of various publishers' "Best of 2018" lists (including Pitchfork, NME, Popjustice, Guardian, Noisey, Popsugar, Rolling Stone and SLATE) These songs are bolded.

QUALIFYING ROUND 34 songs are required to be voted into the game by the forum. EVERYONE can submit 5 songs to be supported by other members, and every member has 5 support votes. This'll be kept tally of in the OP, and will be edited into the main list in blue
Round 1: Out of the full qualified list, each member can choose their favourite TWENTY songs. The songs that get any votes will move onto Round 2. You cannot choose all 3 songs by an artist; a maximum of 2 per artist is enforced in the early rounds to keep it free from the pop stans :p
Round 2: 49 songs only received one vote in the first round. To prevent them becoming surplus to requirement, only a handful can make it to round 3. Each member can choose their favourite SEVEN of them.
Round 3: Out of the top 126 each member can choose their favourite FIFTEEN songs. NEW RULE PART HOPE YOU'RE READING X: You can also choose THREE songs you dislike and want eliminated from the competition. REMEMBER: only pick songs you actively dislike. Don't go trying to pick the faves of people you want to annoy, or any songs you haven't even bothered to listen to :nono: ONLY songs you dislike. You don't even have to do this if you want to keep it positive! Each "fave" vote is a positive point, each "purple" vote means that song loses a point. All songs with an end-of-round positive score of 1 or more will proceed.
Round 4: Out of the 20 songs from Round 3 with just one vote, only five can proceed. Members can choose their FAVOURITE FIVE.
Round 5: Out of the top 85, each member can choose their favourite TWELVE songs.
Round 6: Out of the top 64, each member can choose their favourite TWELVE songs, and also their LEAST FAVOURITE THREE.
Round 7: Out of the top 41, each member can choose their favourite EIGHT songs.
Round 8: Out of the top 22, each member can choose their favourite FIVE songs and their LEAST FAVOURITE ONE.

2 robbed eurovision: you decide songs

Do the suggestion songs have to be anything in particular (eg. top 15 of some charts) or can they literally be anything as long as they were released this year?

i know it's been released 1 week ago, but that's still within 2018 i guess

Nicky, I can't accept songs that weren't even technically released since they didn't qualify for Eurovision, sorry :p they were BBC compositions for a competition, it'd be like nominating an X Factor performance for the game. Sorry.

I think you may have misread: all of the songs that reached the top 15 in charts are already in the competition (the songs that are in tiny text in the OP :p), this "suggestions round" is just for other songs that didn't make the charts / critics' "best of 2018" lists. Usually the sort of round where Louisa Johnson and Becky Hill and Charli XCX can make the grade.

Is that shade? Yes I think it is.

Most people just use this round to fill up the spots of the list where only one song of an artist has made it (ie. someone could nominate a third and final 1975 song, or a third Clean Bandit / Marshmello song, etc.
