Heartbreak Island (New Zealand rip-off of Love Island - but better!!!)

I had no idea this existed  It's pretty similar to Love Island I think, I might watch the first few eps and see if it interests me. All the eps are available online!

Nobody's ever said love is simple, but surely it doesn't have to be as complicated as new reality show Heartbreak Island.

The series, TVNZ's latest reality offering, features 16 single under-30s who spend weeks at a resort in Fiji looking for love and competing for a prize of $100,000.

So what are the rules, and how are they different from the show it's (not so subtly) ripping off, the UK's Love Island? Let us explain.

When the contestants arrive at the Fijian resort where they'll spend the duration of the show, they've already submitted basic information to the show, which has been used to form a kind of dating profile, like what you'd find on an app like Tinder.

They've all had the opportunity to browse the profiles of the opposite sex, and pick first, second and third choices for who they'd most like to partner up with. These rankings are used to decide who'll be paired up with whom in the first episode.

Throughout their time on the island the contestants will face three game events each round of eliminations: Passion Play, Challenges, and Eliminations.

Passion Play gives contestants an opportunity to ditch their current partner for another contestant who has caught their eye. A couple will take part in the Passion Play if one or both halves register for it. They aren't able to recouple with each other if they do ditch one another, though.

At Challenges, the couples will take part in competitive activities designed to test their bond. "Challenges are designed to test a range of things including their commitment, loyalty, communication, mental and physical strength as well as getting them up close and personal!" a press release for the show says.

Each challenge is followed by an Elimination, where the lowest-scoring couple is eliminated from the island - unless a member of another couple opts to betray their partner and "ditch and switch", pairing up with a member of the eliminated couple and sending their existing partner home.

The last couple remaining on the show - presumably because they have the strongest bond - gets to take home the $100,000.

It's a mystery why a show which is essentially about young people partying and acting disgracefully needs such a Kafka-esque legal system.

But it worked for its estranged UK cousin Love Island. Love Island's main point of difference is that, unlike Heartbreak Island, eliminations are decided by public vote. Love Island doesn't feature challenges and eliminations - instead, the couple who get the fewest votes via the show's app are sent home.

Just watched the first ep, it was alright tbf! It seems more competitive than Love Island and they're more open about not being afraid to steal people's partners  But I'll give it a few more eps before I make a proper judgement.

I can already tell Eden is gonna be the bitch of the series! And I hope Thibeaux finds someone, I feel bad for him being everyone's last pick

That alone makes me think it's better than Love Island. I'll watch the first episode later after work.

Just finished Ep 2, I actually think I prefer this format to the Love Island one! The recouplings seem to have a lot more purpose and they're not afraid to ditch their partners :clap1:

Deffo gonna stick with this I think!

Omg this show is actually amazing, this ep alone is better than any Love Island UK ep from the last two series tbh

This format is so much better than Love Island as well

Harrison's voice dead ass sounds like Chris Lilley's mockumentary character Jonah

Honestly y'all need to get watching this show immediately, it's soooo much better than Love Island I genuinely think I prefer it to any UK series!

The last episode I just watched was another amazing drama-filled one and the format is just perfection.

Ok the second half of the ep just went to trash :skull: Producers serving C5 with a punishment that makes no sense

So I just finished watching the finale (I took like a 3 week break because I've been so busy ) and... I have some thoughts... but I'll do a big post with my rankings and stuff later. I highly recommend this show to anyone who's a fan of Love Island/The Challenge/BBUS as it's almost like a hybrid show of all three!

Ok so my thoughts on the series:

-Honestly one of the best reality series I've ever watched  Did start to fizzle out towards the end but the start was sooo strong and every ep had me hooked!

Spoiler:

-Rosie is an absolute icon, I'm still FUMING that she was playing the perfect game and literally only got eliminated because dumb ass Vaz & Harrison had to break the rules. Her playing all the guys like fiddles and Vaz getting pressed every ep only for her to reel him back in again <333
-Helen was so enjoyable to watch as well. Surely has to be one of the worst reality tv eliminations losing her, Kevin and Rosie in one ep </3
-Eden grew on me alot  Wasn't keen on her at the start when she eliminated Thibaut but she was pretty much the only thing keeping me enjoying the show after Rosie & Helen left!
-Kevin was by far the best male  So deluded and yet an iconic disruptor
-THE HANNAH AND SAM DRAMA OMFG :joker: That was one of the best pieces of television I've ever seen. HOW did they think they'd be able to scam everyone into pretending to be exes when they were still together :joker: Hannah was a scream and honestly I should've hated Sam but I found him quite funny because he was clearly unaware how much of a joke he was coming across
-Paora was pretty legendary too <3 Probably one of the hottest on the island IMO
-Thibault was gone too soon </3 But he had no chance sadly. Lovely guy though, I felt so bad for him being eliminated first.
-Ceejay and Harrison I have mixed feelings on. They were both misogynistic ass***** at times but honestly they were a scream throughout the season and it wouldn't have been the same without them. Harrison's exit was pretty hilarious even if he did single-handedly cause the worst elimination result ever. He was hot too so
-Alana & Harry - They were literally there for like one ep :skull: Such a pointless addition to the series, know nothing about them.
-Kristian is SO FINE <3333 I wish he'd been in from the start. Sadly he didn't seem to have much of a personality although it sounds like he was the villain of Season 1? Can't find the eps for it tho </3 Think him and Ruby swapped roles this season, I didn't like her though
-Darius was godawful and I rejoiced at his elimination. He was just scummy and slimy, couldn't stand him.
-Vaz was such a douchebag, he really riled me up as well. But I enjoyed seeing Rosie crush his heart every other ep

In the end I'm glad two originals won, especially with one of them being Eden. The disruptors were ok but only a few really made any impact (Hannah, Kevin, Harrison) so it felt right that originals won.

The finale felt really rushed though and anti-climatic. It didn't feel like an event at all, I was expecting a little more. But overall I still enjoyed the season! I'm hoping it gets renewed for Season 3 but tbh I don't even know how I even stumbled across this show, it's almost non-existent online and it seems like it gets a **** ton of hate on social media and from New Zealand locals for apparently being too trashy :joker: Idk why tho because it was amazing TV <3

Cast ranking:

1. Rosie
2. Helen
3. Eden
4. Kevin

Where can I watch this?

Morgan. 06-07-2019 03:27 PM

Is season 1 actually available to watch anywhere? It seems to be a bit of a ghost season

Think Season 1 is only available on the official site but you need a new zealand VPN </3

Season 2 was amazing tho and apparently improved the format from S1 so it probably isn't as good as S2

Morgan. 06-07-2019 06:21 PM

Thank you!

I finally got my hands on a download of Season 1 <3

Gonna watch it soon altho I feel like it won't match the amazingness of Season 2, which introduced more twists/gameplay than the first season I believe.

Headie 05-04-2020 05:45 PM

Oop Eden & Ceejay are still together!!
