Previous NASA worker calls out man on dating app who ‘joked’ she was receptionist...

Just this week it was announced that more girls than boys studied science at A-level for the first time.

However, it appears gender prejudices are still rife in some quarters of dating apps, as one woman has discovered.

Dr Lauren McKeown, who previously worked at NASA, was asked by a potential suitor called Mikey on Hinge if she had been “the receptionist” at the California-based organisation.

The woman from Dublin shared a screenshot of their exchange after the pair matched, and captioned it “and this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I am single”, in a post on Twitter that has now gone viral.

Responding to the part of Lauren’s profile where she reveals “The dorkiest thing about me is...I worked at NASA”, the man wrote, “****** me that’s cool. Wait till I tell my parents.”

He then continued: “So what are you, like the receptionist?

“Jk you look reasonably smart.”

In a reply that has been praised by social media users, Lauren wrote back: “Smart enough to know at least that judging a woman's intelligence based on her appearance might not be the best way to initiate conversation.

“PS. my mother is a primary school receptionist and is the wisest, most inspirational, and kindest person I know.”

She added: “So much so in fact that my PHD thesis in planetary science is dedicated to her.”

Her post has been ‘liked’ more than 178,000 times, and received more than 17,000 shares and over 2,000 comments.

Many people were shocked that Mikey thought he had made a good attempt at “flirting”.

One person wrote: “God, how depressing. It’s 2019 and there are still men who feel threatened by intelligent women!”

Another commented: “I should think this is why HE'S single, actually!”

A third shared: “When I started working at a new NASA facility, someone assumed I needed directions and I was pointed in the direction of the gift shop...”

And a fourth added: “I am really sorry for all men kind. Every day I get embarrassed by these daft muppets.”

"I am really sorry for all men kind, every day I get embarrassed by these daft muppets"

In the words of Arista "How nice"

Ammi, isn't sad when men feel so insecure and resentful they need to denigrate women to feel better about themselves

Who's criticising women? Feminists maybe, but not women.

That's not her job title, it's her qualification. My cousin has a "Masters" in Sociology, but sells houses.

She never said she wasn't a receptionist, so she still could be.

Sociology is marginally more useful than 3 stars on a mcdonalds name badge. Let's not equate it with a PhD in planetary science.

Just kidding, but it's one of those degrees taken by people for the sake of going to university; unless the prospective student knows exactly what they want to do with it, it's a bit of a waste.

Maybe she worked in the canteen?

One thing we do know, she doesn't work there anymore.

Maybe she was a receptionist there while she was studying, and then she left for bigger and better things when she qualified :)

Remarkable

Cherie 19-08-2019 12:31 PM

He made a joke and it fell flat, not the cleverest thing to say, but for her to try to humiliate him wasn't particularly nice either, I don't understand the need to broadcast every thing on social media, maybe if she had actually had a conversation with him about how insulted she was, that would be they way to go
