MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police arrested a man suspected of throwing battery acid on a Hispanic man who says his attacker asked him, "why did you come here and invade my country?"

Police said Monday they arrested a 61-year-old white man suspected in Friday night's attack, but they haven't identified him. Police said they're investigating the case as a hate crime and charges are expected Tuesday.

Mahud Villalaz suffered second-degree burns to his face after a man confronted him Friday about how he had parked his truck and accused him of being in the country illegally. Villalaz, 42, is a U.S. citizen who immigrated from Peru.

The attack comes amid a spike in hate crimes directed at immigrants that researchers and experts on extremism say is tied to mainstream political rhetoric.

At a news conference on Monday, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett expressed shock at the attack and blamed President Donald Trump for inciting hatred against minorities. The president has repeatedly referred to migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border as an "invasion."

"To single out someone because they're from a Hispanic origin is simply wrong. And we know what's happening," Barrett said. "Everybody knows what's happening. It's because the president is talking about it on a daily basis that people feel they have license to go after Hispanic people. And it's wrong."

A report issued last year by the Anti-Defamation League said extreme anti-immigrant views have become part of the political mainstream in recent years through sharp rhetoric by anti-immigration groups and politicians, including Trump.

The lengths some people would go to is absolutely disgusting. How can a human have such disdain and hatred for a group of people is beyond me.

Some of these people don't even realize the irony.

Trump has exacerbated this problem and given racist courage. They see him being a bigot and think they're perfectly entitled to be one too.

This is in much the same way that Corbyn's Labour has exacerbated anti-Semitism in the UK by refusing tacking it head on.

This thread is about one man's allegation against another that is very unlekley to change as there were no audio witnesses so why its a thread at all begs the question?

i expect the attacker will be prosecuted for the assualt but not for a hate crime

Still well done the Mayor to wade in and blame Trump on an allegation as yet unproved

No one said not newsworthy but a random incident in Milwauke, USA that is still an allegation making it to a big brother website in the UK is a stretch

the reason it was posted imho was political taling into account the posters posting history (no shade intended)

others may of course disagree

There's nothing random about a targeted violent attack against a perceived illegal immigrant in a country where anti-immigrant rhetoric is all the rage (the Supreme Court is ruling on the ridiculous decision to end the DACA programme tomorrow, for example), and it's part of a growing tend which is worthy of discussion regardless of whether it's on a news site or a Big Brother forum

As for the topic itself, it's yet another consequence of the insanity that the current administration has unleashed on the country. Rightt Wing terrorism has become the number 1 terrorist threat in the US, hate crimes are on the rise and it's largely down to an administration that empowers hatred. The fact a white person could accuse anyone of invading the US given the genocide their ancestors committed against the Native Americans is ignorant to the extreme.

...that poor guy, I can’t imagine the pain as the acid touched his skin...awful...so the attack was by a Marine veteran who had once held some people at gunpoint and had served prison time for that..?...and it would have been so calculated for him to carry the acid specifically..that’s all kinds of evil...it’s an action not designed to kill, but to impact someone’s life forever ...
