You can’t really do business from the back of a phone shop

Why is costing so much in the first place

What does he think £5m will get him in East London?

The man's an idiot.

London has a mayor? Does he do anything?

Liam- 25-06-2020 11:05 AM

He upsets racists by just existing, that’s always fun

He's making a list of statues, I'm told. And he's going to take them down.

I hear the Romans won't be taking down the Colosseum and the Egyptians won't be taking down the pyramids even though both were built by slaves. And the Poles won't be taking down Auschwitz either. Oh and it's still okay to buy VW and BMW, even though the companies were both set up at war factories and run with slaves. I'm assuming the billionaires that own them won't be handing any money out in reparation.

Are we comparing statues to concentration camps? Really?

One is glorification of a person's life and contribution to society, and the other isn't.

The concentration camps were left standing for a reason, as the Germans tried desperately to cover up their crimes.

My hometown mayor works from home.

Maybe we should uproot the Roman roads, as the Romans enslaved the native Brits...

There is a difference between work that was carried out by slaves (why would you destroy that?) and a statue glorifying a slave trader

Were they being "glorified" for their involvement in slavery, or for actual achievements and contributions?

They're closely linked. "Actual achievements and contributions" were more than likely funded by slavery.

It makes no difference, being a slave trader should automatically cancel a person out from having a statue dedicated to them.

If Ted Bundy had invented something amazing, do you think he would deserve to have a statue erected to show how great he was? I don't

I don't think that makes any difference myself.

Jimmy Saville raised millions for Hospitals and charities..
However the downfall of all his public glorification had to happen.

I see no difference here as with individuals who were shockingly involved in slave trading.
It's still being part of destroying lives and cruelty to other individuals.
Just like Saville.

Tom4784 25-06-2020 11:54 AM

equating a statue commemorating a slave trader to a road or a facility people actually use (in another thread, there was a crazy person suggesting pulling down hospitals named for the slaver in defense of his statue) is bat**** insane.

Marsh. 25-06-2020 11:57 AM

The whataboutery gets ever more ridiculous.

The lengths people will go to just to defend a useless statue they don't give a damn about any other time. Or to just hurl abuse at the Mayor. Pathetic.

Maybe we should ban Korans, because they glorify slavery and Mohammed was a slave owner who married a child?

Care to explain why you chose to highlight the Koran specifically when pretty much all religious texts from times of antiquity spoke of slavery as an acceptable thing?

I didn't choose the Bible because Jesus didn't own slaves or marry anyone, and I don't know enough about other religious texts to talk about them. Also, plenty of islamic countries still have slaves, including the one that's hosting the World Cup soon.

I wonder if the players who wore Black Lives Matter on their shirts will speak out about the slave built stadiums they'll be playing in...

The bible has plenty of stuff on slavery.

Also an excellent example of whataboutery there. I don't even follow football and even I can tell you that the Qatar world cup has been incredibly divisive. I think a lot of players will refuse to play in it and Fifa have gotten a **** ton of blowback about it.

Yet if he commissioned millions of pounds of work on it, he’d also be slagged off, he can’t win.
