Waco: American Apocalypse

Documentary about the Waco siege in 1993. Fascinating documentary but what I found really fascinating, and somewhat concerning, was the tone of it given current global events?

It was, essentially, a siege against a compound of religious fundamentalists (a cult, basically) who were absolutely armed to the teeth. It covers both sides of it and has people speaking who, frankly, are still blatantly on the kool-aid 30 years later :umm2:. It seems on the surface to be going for a balanced approach and it's clear that various law enforcement agencies made some terrible errors of judgement. A lot of people died, including children.

BUT ... I came away from it with a weird feeling in my bones that the documentary quite openly came down on the side of the cult that was "just defending its freedoms". It seems legitimately slanted to sympathising with the Christian fundamentalist paedophile cult (girls "came of age" at 12 within this community and the leader it seems was sleeping with practically every female there).

I dunno. It feels like an odd shout for Netflix especially given the emboldened evangelists already springing up all over the US.

Anyway give it a watch and see if you also come away with the impression that the documentary is quite clearly saying "they should have left them alone"..

i haven't seen that one yet, but i remember the event itself, and it was shocking. I saw another documentary about a cult on netflix and it was very similar

The problem these days is that those religious cults have almost become acceptable mainstream in the USA. We talk about the religious fanatics in the middle east, but the USA is pretty much the same

I sort of expected that the old cult members they had on would be more of the "Wow I was so brainwashed back then!" variety ... but honestly the vibe of the documentary - to me - is very much "The stupid FBI came along and ruined our cult!"
