Least watched launch show since 2002!

The tenth series of Channel 4’s Big Brother made a solid start last night with a total audience of 5.1m viewers (23.4%) at 9pm.

The 95-minute reality TV show from Endemol-owned Brighter Pictures managed to hit a 15-minute high of 5.4m – including the audience on C4+1 – at 10pm. Over a five minute period it hit 5.7m (26.2%).

The launch show was 183% above Channel 4’s total slot average performance for the year so far of 1.8m (8.1%). In 2008 it managed an audience of 2.2m (10.5%).

But the show was the least-watched launch episode of a series since at least the third one in 2002. Last year the show debuted with 5.3m (24.8%).

Well, after 10 years one wouldn't expect it to be rating as well as past years.

markmarc 05-06-2009 09:33 AM

i expected this years to be lower like in the 4 million bracket

DigitalSid 05-06-2009 09:41 AM

Good points

- 16-34s were up
- the share is down less than a percent on last year

Bad points

- ABC1s were down
- The overall rating is lower

Tom 05-06-2009 09:42 AM

This year rated lower than last year yet its the lowest since 2002? Okay then ....... :conf:

And last year got 5.4

Article is all wrong

DigitalSid 05-06-2009 10:24 AM

Tom, if it's the lowest since 2002, it's hardly gonna be higher than last year is it?

Beastie 05-06-2009 10:50 AM

thats still good viewing figures!

I think it did really well TBH,i don't know why people are looking in the past,i think it's best all we do is think positive and think towards the future.

I think it did well. Normally the launch adds about 400-500,000 for the official, so we should be getting an official launch of about 5.5-5.6m which would be brilliant.

arsenalforever 05-06-2009 11:52 AM

Thats good going seen as this BB hasn't been talked about at all.

Jayson 05-06-2009 11:58 AM

Its good, after 10 years people lose interest.

but i don't get what happens with 4od, catch up and other ways to view that weren't available in 2002...

can someone explain to me how catch ups, repeats, 4Od contribute to figures as never understood!

Even though i think the ratings are impressive for the launch, i can see MANY people turn off, it will go under 3m constantly i bet, and it has got to do with the LF, i miss it a lot right now,
There could be an argument going on right now, which BB wont show in the HLs if they like the person who is arguing to try and avoid him/her geting voted off.

Slezer 05-06-2009 12:12 PM

Im not surpised after the last couple of series of big brother...

Hopefully this one will be a lot more interesting.

moveupandon 05-06-2009 12:30 PM

still don't get how it's a fair comparison as the media is changing...

hannah. 05-06-2009 12:32 PM

That's not that bad. and we can tell that the people who were watching were interested in it because of how many people were on here last night
Could've been a lot worse

I think the lack of LF in the daytime will boost the HL ratings a tiny bit.
I used to watch quite a lot of LF in the summer and when I'd seen a whole day and nothing seemed to happen in the DR I wouldn't bother watching the highlights the next night, but maybe that was just me?

M X 05-06-2009 12:37 PM

Can't say I didn't expect it. :bawling:

Patrick 05-06-2009 12:55 PM

Well thats good for a show that hasnt been talked about or advertised as much as it use to be!
