I think games have been done dirty over the years, they've mainly been adapted into films, where you have to condense so much of what makes it good into a two hour period, TV is a much better medium...

I was able to work out the timelines from name...

I was able to work out the timelines from name drops of the city that fell and other references and I'd never played the games. Absolutely loved the series, one of the best Netflix Originals yet.
