This reminds me of my Mother In Law theorising that women only become lesbians because they're "too shy to talk to men"
I'd say it's more likely to be the other way round (if this is even the reason); perhaps heterosexual women feel more pressure to stay in shape because of the widely-spread idea that men won't be interested in someone who is overweight.
