and the anime seriously didn't help. Ash tried new tactics which ultimately fell through and paled in comparison to how great he was in DP (character wise and strategically, see: Counter Shield) and we saw him regress to Top 8 from Top 4. I fell out of love with the anime during the Black and White series but seeing Ash's progress in Kalos was great

The XY&Z anime was great to watch and even when I stopped playing the games, I found myself catching up on the anime
