There's a SMALL chance that they're trying to say he was profoundly changed by the 6(?) years somewhat-isolated in prison which is theoretically possible, but they didn't show anything like enough of it to make it feasible in the show. They could have done an episode in early s9 showing flashbacks spanning those years with a gradual breakdown / change. A complete psychological break and recovery could trigger a drastic personality change but... They just didn't show it so the audience can't really just assume that.
