You can claim some circumstances but they want proof, e.g. my dad got out of it a few years ago because he had planned a month-long trip to Canada to visit family... but IIRC he had to actually send them proof of the flights / accomodation AND prove that it was booked before he got the summons.
That said being summoned doesn't mean you'll end up a juror, most are dismissed before the trial.
And if you do end up on a jury it's usually something **** and straightforward like drugs / theft. Hardly anyone gets to be on the jury of a "juicy" trial
