They're landed elite Oliver - the claim was that it was their "spare cottage", not that it was their home. They're the sort of folks who would feasibly have a random "spare" house. They're the sort of people who don't have a garden, they have "grounds". I don't think they're renting anything from anyone. They may well not know what the word means
