The Lancet estimated that the bill for closing British schools for 12 weeks was
one per cent of GDP because so many parents would need to stay home. But
that wasn’t the true bill, not even close. Among the hidden costs were nearly
100,000 “ghost” children who never returned to the classroom and more than a
million youngsters now on waiting lists for mental health services.
