I disagree. I don't think JC is thinking of the media as a whole but his own career which might have flourished much more had he not made a stupid comment many years ago.
The piece reads to me as an older man, jealous of the upcoming young generation. I am a similar age to Mr Clary but recognise that in all professions the young must be trained in the job and the older generation recognise that fact.

I don't understand your second point in the context of this particular piece.

On the one hand Brian is accused of imitating Graham Norton, in this piece he is accused of imitating Julian Clary, poor Brian, all the while he is just trying to be himself.

I don't think the piece is harsh on Brian at all. It is harsh on Julian himself if anything, who seems to want the media to be dominated by the three men listed who may not appeal to everyone's taste. The media is like every other industry, a natural level will be found.
