From what I've read, people who already know / enjoy DC comics lore and the characters like it, casual viewers find it good popcorn viewing (for the action) but find it hard to follow. Seems like it's not very self contained and requires background knowledge of the source material to follow the story.

Quite a lot of films like that really... Where you're like "that was awesome, but if I hadn't read the book I'd have had no clue what was going on...".

Marvel are better at creating films that form a series but are also a self-contained narrative. Except maybe Thor. Anyone coming into Thor 2 without seeing the first one is likely to be baffled
