The context does matter.

Kim muttering to herself "Ooh they're bastards!" about the whole house because she's a dotty old woman annoyed by most things done by shouting, drinking housemates, or referring to a few housemates she's argued with is an entirely different scenario to Nicola calling Jedward bastards which would be an entirely different situation.
