It doesn't sound like there was any way for the situation to have a good outcome, better that the father was killed than the children. It may sound awful to say this but I hope he was a generally abusive / unpleasant person... not even for him, but for the young girl. If he was previously a good father and had some sort of psychotic break, and her actions lead to him being killed (even if it was the only way), then it will take a lot for her to get over her part in all of it if she ever does. Likely to blame herself and wonder if there was another way, even though it seems unlikely that there was.
