Birmingham Airport suspends flights after ‘security incident’ on Aer Lingus plane

Birmingham Airport has suspended all flights after a security incident onboard an Aer Lingus plane.

The Irish airline later confirmed that an undeclared item was discovered but was proven not to be a security risk, after it was examined when the aircraft returned to the airport.

Passengers were encouraged to still turn up if they have a flight scheduled, with the airline working to accommodate impacted travellers.

An Aer Lingus spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that an undeclared item discovered on Aer Lingus Regional flight EI3647, operated by Emerald Airlines, from Birmingham to Belfast today was not a security risk. Our teams are currently working to accommodate impacted passengers’.

The flight, which is understood to be EI3647, had been due to depart at 3.10pm but was delayed for 40 minutes. Just an hour into its journey to Belfast, it returned to the airport with the passengers and staff escorted from the aircraft.

West Midlands Railway have also said that trains between Birmingham New Street and Coventry have also been suspended while emergency services attend the incidents. Services are currently at a standstill until further notice.

Birmingham Airport suspends flights over security incident

Birmingham Airport has temporarily suspended all flights after there was believed to have been a security incident on a plane.
However Aer Lingus said the undeclared item on their regional flight, from Birmingham to Belfast, was not a security risk.
A spokesperson added: "Our teams are currently working to accommodate impacted passengers."
A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said the aircraft landed safely.
Everyone was taken off the plane and "all customers due to travel should make their way to the airport and check in as normal," they added.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We are currently at Birmingham Airport following a report of a suspicious item found on a flight destined for Belfast.
"The plane was diverted shortly after take-off and landed back at Birmingham airport just after 16:00."
Several flights at the airport have been delayed by more than two hours, according to departure updates on the airport's website.
A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport confirmed the airport had received a number of flights that have been diverted since Birmingham was closed, including a Ryanair flight from Lanzarote.
Train services were also at a standstill at Birmingham International railway station with West Midlands Railway confirming this was due to the incident at the airport.
Network Rail said at about 18:20 BST all rail lines have reopened but disruption was expected until about 19:00 BST.

Tbf when you're a huge Airport like the Birmingham one, you can't take any risks.

It's better to turn up late than turn up dead.

That happened on our flight as well !

We were delayed nearly an hour as one of the passengers had left a bag in the waiting area ( boarded without it )

We were never told if anyone claimed it
