Arrow How can we change this fµcked-up world?

Let's get into another debate which will be very interesting to read as I do believe that there are a lot of bright minds in this forum that I think would be interested posting their thoughts regarding another controversial issue.

I do think that much of what has been going on with the world today has to do with our system of beliefs, i.e., religion and/or adopted ancient cultures, democracy, communism, etc.

Obviously, the world is not at its best right now, hunger, poverty, pollution, corruption, environmental disasters, etc. the list goes on and on and on.

So let’s hear it guys. If the current world leaders can’t come up with a solution (or do you think there is a solution?), let’s try yours.

Educate men like Arista that women don't exist on this earth to serve men like him - and that, in a progressive society like we live in today, women have choices - whether men like him like it or not! In fact, bugger all they can do about it - so I suggest they quickly learn how to look after themselves including boiling their own eggs! Sigh!

There is no way back now. The western worlds greed relies on the third worlds poverty. Which means the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer.

Humans are selfish bastards. Thats the problem with the world.

I remember a scene from "The Time Machine" (original version) when the Time Traveller arrives way into the future where everybody is equal, everybody shares everything and there is no longer any competition or rivalry, but at a price. Evolution has made all humans clones of each other, so there is no longer any individuality or reason to strive for anything. It is Utopia.

There was a scene where someone is drowning in the river, and the rest of the people on the riverbank are just watching on, emotionless and uncaring. The premise being that since everyone is exactly the same, the loss of one of them is no big deal, and human life is not valued at all. The Time Traveller dives into the river and saves the girl, but there is no reaction, good or bad from the bystanders, they have evolved to their present state by eliminating feelings and emotions.

Somewhere in all that is the message that the solution can sometimes be worse than the problem.

Personally - I see nothing wrong with recognising certain differences between men and women, and indeed rejoicing in them, as some of these differences ie femininity and masculinity are what attract men and women to each other - but they should not be used as reasons for treating them differently and trying to isolate women from certain positions in life or attempting to intimidate them from following certain paths in life - which has long been the case!

That's the one - fab film, and remained true to the H.G. Wells book without being too pedantic about it.

I take the neo-Platonic view that the reason society will never be equal is because when we attempt this, humans in their frailty and flawed nature, can only conjure a weak imitation of their ideals at best.

There are a lot of common sense things which I would say could alleviate suffering in the world. The best thing Western society can do right now is give up on its vane crusade for democracy around the world and lift its aid embargoes on desperately poor countries that were enforced for these reasons. Human rights hardly figures into it when people are struggling to stay alive.

At home, I just want to see an end to the relentless ideological attack on the public sector and nationalisation of any kind from the media and all mainstream parties. Both of which are desperately out of touch with the interests and needs of the public. I also want the law changed in such a way that will make life extremely difficult for any sort of bully and have bullying recognised and frowned upon to the same extent as sexual harassment. I can't even begin to describe how much they are the root of society's ills.

Some interesting views out there, I'm quite glad the thread took off well.

I generally think changes cannot be made by only one generation, nor 2. I think it takes time but the sooner the better. Were people happier before than nowadays ? People tend to say yes because it was less superficial, less technology, less individualism but I think we, as humans, have showed enough intelligence to make some parts of life better and taking lessons from our past. So I can't see why we cannot apply this intelligence to solve a few issues.

For example, an extra 6% on everyone's annual tax would guarantee the end of famine in Africa. Would you be happy to pay it? I would be annoyed of course but it's a harm for the better. I just think it's time to take into ourselves and take advantage from our skills to solve issues. And take that from a guy who isn't so keen on charity and stuff.

Why not feed the rich to the hungry and redistribute their wealth accordingly.

Would also get rid of the selfish brats who think Daddy's money makes them something special.
