The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia is referred to as the “Zoo of Death” due to the devastating conditions animals endure. Also known as Kebun Binatang Surabaya, it was founded 98 years ago and is the one of the largest zoos in South East Asia.

For only $1 per ticket, visitors can view thousands of emaciated exotic animals in their horrific living conditions.

Roughly 25 animals die at Surabaya every month from unnatural causes, mostly starvation.



Kliwon the giraffe died with a 40lb wad of plastic the size of a beach ball in its stomach. Rozek the tiger starved to death after his digestive tract rotted away from being fed meat laced with formaldehyde. Many other of the large carnivores have been starved and malnutritioned for so long that their bodies can no longer absorb any nutrition. Michael the African Lion was found hanging inside its cage having been strangled by a steel cable. [read an article here]

Those who are not euthanized are starving, and those that do die are rumored to have their most valuable body parts sold

I guess they probably figure it's better for the animals to go hungry than their own children. Maybe it's in an area of Indonesia where there aren't many economic opportunities, and this was a business idea to put food on their own children's plates at the expense of these animals.

Perhaps these starving animals are feeding starving children?

I hate Zoos , Prisons for animals who have committed no crimes.

There is no place for Zoos in the modern world they need to be phased out. And seeing pictures like these will surely bring that day forward hopefully.

I agree. I support animal sanctuaries, but anything that involves cages or any type of performing, is repulsive.

Life is short and precious. we should all be trying to preserve all forms of life and make life as good for each other as possible, including animals.

It's a small world, let's try to be as kind as possible. is that so hard?

We don't spend much time on this earth in the grand scheme of things, let's try to make it better than we found it. Let's try to be more compassionate, and more giving, and more loving than any generation before us. I think that is a good goal.
