Leader Putin warns All Gays http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...mpics-children Russian president vows no discrimination but says gay people must observe law banning 'homosexual propaganda' [Vladimir Putin has said that gay people will be not be subjected to harassment at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, as long as they stay away from children. Putin is currently in Sochi reviewing preparations for the Games, which begin in three weeks. During a meeting with some of the thousands of volunteers who will work during the Olympics, he was asked why their uniform were rainbow coloured, given the recent Kremlin anti-gay initiatives. "We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships," said Putin in comments reported by Russian agencies. "We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia. I want to underline this. Propaganda among children. These are absolutely different things – a ban on something or a ban on the propaganda of that thing." Putin also added that Russia was more liberal than some other countries, claiming that in certain US states homosexuality was still punishable by law.] if you are Gay in Russia - hide Last edited by arista; 18-01-2014 at 12:05 PM. |

I can't understand how the Winter Olympics hasn't been withdrawn from Russia. Once again they show themselves as an uneducated backwater. How embarrassing for them.

The Olympics and the World Cup are businesses, they only care about money. The truth is if you really tried to find a country to host these that doesn't have some kind of human rights issues, you'd have a pretty difficult task. Britain itself was attacked for being chosen for 2012 because of the war in Iraq. Sydney 2000 was attacked for Aboriginal treatment, etc... every country has it's skeletons. As abhorrent as Russia's anti-gay laws are, if we only gave sporting events to perfect countries, we'd have no sporting events.

I know there are 29 states in which you can still be fired from your job for being gay. The republicans refuse to allow a federal vote outlawing this practice on the state level.

Putin is a ****ing moron and any international event that takes place in Russia should be widely boycotted.
Putin doesn't know his elbow from his arse, homosexuality isn't banned in ANY American state and the thing about European countries considering making Paedophilia legal is so stupid that I can't actually believe he has the gall to say it. It makes me wonder how such a moron could actually worm his way into power. |

Anybody who thinks the man is stupid or weak or a fool clearly has not any grasp on reality and probably gets their news from the Sun or Daily Mail.

The thing is, he's not a stupid man. He knows exactly what he's doing. He's uniting his people by encouraging them to hate something in common. Nothing unites people more than hating something in common; homosexuality is being portrayed as a hedonistic Western concept and any Russian discovered to be homosexual is therefore a traitor to religious and social values in Russia... he's a very smart man, Putin, which is much scarier than him just being stupid and uneducated. It's the opposite.

Russia tried to integrate itself into the West and got knocked back; and then institutions like NATO, the EU etc started to encroach upon former Soviet territory... installing defense systems in Romania, EU accessions etc... the recent troubles in the Ukraine were a turning point for Russia. The Ukraine was about to commit to EU partnership and then Russia put all its political pressure on the Ukraine through oil and gas to keep it in Russia's sphere of influence; the West has never really tried to put an end to the tensions created by the Cold War and now it just sort of exists as an energy war instead; all these proxy problems in other countries are based solely on oil and gas and I think Putin's trying to promote Russian values everywhere and hating on the gays is just a small part of that.

I was about to suggest maybe he's secretly gay so I went and looked at his Wikipedia entry because I'd never heard any mention of him having a wife or family but then discovered he is married (though due to divorce his wife) and he has two daughters but no pictures of them have ever been published in Russian media. He doesn't seem to be a family man.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he turned out to be gay, it would make a lot of sense.

The voice of reason

Not every country can be on the same page as we are.
The Winter Olympics are helping to highlight this issue in Russia re homosexuality. I think it will help push this agenda in a positive way overall. |
