Default Theresa May poised to announce end of free movement for new EU migrants next month

Quote:
Theresa May is next month poised to announce the end of free movement for new EU migrants on the same day that she formally triggers Brexit negotiations.

The Prime Minister is expected to say that EU citizens who travel to Britain after she triggers Article 50 will no longer have the automatic right to stay in the UK permanently.

They will instead be subject to migration curbs after Britain leaves the European Union, which could include a new visa regime and restricted access to benefits.

Mrs May is expected to say that EU migrants who arrived in the UK before the "cut-off date" will have their rights protected as long British citizens living elsewhere in Europe are granted the same assurance.

Iain Duncan Smith, a leading Eurosceptic conservative MP, said that that announcement will show that Mrs May is taking control of Britain's borders while giving clarity to the 3.6million EU migrants already living in the UK.

He said: "Theresa understands that if you want to take control you have to command the high ground. She will be giving clarity by setting a clear deadline while the European Union looks increasingly muddled and mean-spirited".

The announcement means that the "cut-off date" for EU migrants is likely to be around March 15, once the Government's Article 50 bill has gone through Parliament.

The Prime Minister is expected to appeal to other European Union nations to reach a quick deal on the issue so it can be removed from Brexit negotiations as soon as possible.

It is likely to put her in conflict with the European Union, which has been pushing for Mrs May to delay the cut-off date until 2019. However ministers have raised concerns that waiting until the end of negotiations will lead to a huge surge in the number of EU migrants coming to the UK before Brexit.

"We have had some suggestion that that the European Commission might attempt to force us to protect everyone who arrives up to the moment of departure," a Government source said. "We could end up with half of Romania and Bulgaria coming here if we wait that long."

The Government has also considered suggestions that the cut-off date should be set for the referendum date in June last year. However Government lawyers have advised that such an approach would be illegal.

Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, said that after Britain leaves the European Union "we will be ending free movement as we know it".

She is examining plans to give new arrivals who get jobs in key sectors of the economy multi-year visas while limiting access to benefits.

Under one plan being considered migrants would be given five-year working visas but barred from claiming in-work benefits while they are in Britain.

There are ways of regulating things like that they simply won't do. Hence the people in this country who feed on it but shouldn't.

Free movement within the EU went further than that.

So, what about their families? What if said skilled worker has a husband/wife who is unskilled, what if they have two teenage kids who are also unskilled? Immigrants are unfairly painted in a bad light, 99% of the ones I know are good hard working people, who, even if they are unskilled, contribute more to this country than some British people.

I agree with all you have said, but have you watched some of the benefit programs on Channel5? where you have whole Eastern European families not wanting to work, but only claim benefits? They can claim benefits in any other EU country, but why the UK? and why are the government allowing this when our own citizens are getting sanctioned for the least possible reason?

Immigrants can only claim benefits for an incredibly short amount of time and if they don't find a job by the end of that period then their job search visa will be voided. The money a typical person gets from benefits is barely enough to live on, nobody's gonna set up shop here just to sponge off benefits that are only just enough to live on especially when they'll be given the boot in a few weeks time if they don't show results.

Honestly, people need to stop using benefits as an excuse to validate their xenophobia. If you took a second to google what immigrants are entitled to you'd see that it's basically **** all which makes the idea of immigrating just to live off benefits pointless.

EU citizens are entitled to more benefits then those out of the EU.

As i said we need to fix the people in this country instead of putting them last

You've just called the majority of British benefit claimants lazy and work shy.

Now they're the neglected ones?

You can't have it both ways.

I have explained before on this thread that the country is already over popularised and because of that so many families are living in poverty.

Poverty should not exist in Britain in 2017

Wrong. EU Immigrants are only entitled to similar benefits as British citizens if they are working and contributing otherwise they get the same window of opportunity to claim jobseekers as any other immigrant and they too need to show results in that period or have their visa revoked plus before they can claim anything they need to pass a test first.

To think that immigrants come to this country just to scrape by on benefits for three months (which they aren't even guaranteed to get in the first place) before getting the boot is just plain silly.

Not the only reason, merely one of the effects pointed out.

Otherwise we'd think the only reason you want to leave is because you don't like foreign street sweepers.
