EastEnders is bringing in Sean Mahon to play the role of Mel Owen's ex-husband Ray Kelly.
The BBC soap have confirmed that the actor's mysterious character will be heading to Walford for an explosive storyline later this summer. A serial risk-taker and an expert liar, Ray has been described as having the of the gab when it comes to getting what he wants. An EastEnders teaser warns that the residents shouldn't be taken in by Ray's charming and slick exterior, as underneath, he's a man who thrives on danger and cannot be trusted. Viewers have already seen Mel swerve several questions in regards to Ray, but Hunter will be pursuing his determination to get in contact with his stepdad regardless. It's clear that Ray is the last person Mel wants to see turn up in the Square, but what is the reason for his sudden arrival? And what will it mean for Mel and Jack? Ray is also the brother of Ciara Maguire, whose villainous ex-husband Aidan orchestrated the risky heist earlier this year. Speaking about joining the show, Sean said: "I remember watching the very first episode of EastEnders back in 1985, little did I think I would be roaming the streets of Walford and hanging out at The Queen Vic all these years later. "I'm so happy to join such an incredibly hard-working and talented team and I'm very much looking forward to playing out the drama that inevitably ensues on any given day in Albert Square. "My character Ray Kelly is not one to tread lightly, and his arrival to the Square will cause shockwaves for many of the residents… it doesn't get much better than that." EastEnders' executive consultant John Yorke added: "Sean is both a wonderful actor and a delight to work with. His character brings to the show some very big secrets and we can't wait to watch them explode." Sean has already started filming with the show and will appear on screen later this summer. His past credits include Irish soap Red Rock, plus the film Mr and Mrs Smith.

I wonder what makes them think fans care for the 2002 throwbacks. It’s too much now.

How is Ray a 2002 throwback?
I actually don't think any of the criticisms on DS about Yorke reverting things back to 2000 hold any water. He's brought Mel back. But she's moved on from 2002 and has a grown child with a backstory to reveal from.the 16 years she was away. She's one of the best returns because she's recognisable as her character without seeming like she's stepped out of 2002. It's Mel but older. Then the other one was bringing the Slaters back. But Kat was last in the show 2 years ago so she's not a 00s throwback anymore, same for Mo. And Jean only left her fulltime role in 2013. In regards to Kat though, I wish she'd stop dressing like a fancy dress version of Kat. Like yes she was known for liking trashy clothes and leopard print but she wore normal stuff too, now she's 24/7 orange face and leopard print. Like a Bet Lynch tribute. |

Carmel has shown she can act, she was amazing last week and deserves awards.
She was so annoying before this storyline and now she's wonderful.

I don't get this storyline at all!
If they've known Stuart for so many years, why is he only now acting so weird around the Carters and being all threatening and lecherous with Linda? Like, in all of the years him and Mick have been friends it's only now he's shown this side and only now Mick doesn't like it? |

I got the sense that Mick wasn’t completely happy to see him when he first turned up though, plus if they haven’t seen each other since the events of whatever happened to Stuart when he was younger then Mick perhaps would be slightly cautious? Idk.
What do we think with Tina then? Rape seems a bit obvious?

His first appearance was about how when he shows up he always takes Mick away and they get wasted? |

Ok, watching that last scene maybe she was raped by someone she never saw and now hearing him put that song on again she's realised it's him?
But, this is silly because you'd think Linda's rape story would've stirred something in Tina before now. Especially when everyone was blaming and disbelieving Linda. |
