Default Fox/Disney deal approved.

Quote:
Shareholders have signed off on Walt Disney's plan to buy the film and television assets of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox for $71bn (£54bn).

The approval, which had been expected, bring the merger one step closer to completion.

Regulators in the US have already approved the plan, but it still needs the go-ahead in many other countries.

The companies said last December they hoped to complete the deal in 12-18 months.

Disney had faced competition from US cable giant Comcast for the Fox assets, but Comcast retreated after Disney raised its bid last month.

The two companies continue to vie for satellite broadcaster Sky.

Disney hopes the Fox acquisition will make it more competitive with online rivals such as Netflix, by giving it more shows and movies, as well as a bigger stake in the online streaming service Hulu.

It agreed to sell Fox's 22 regional sports networks in order to win approval from anti-trust regulators at the US Justice Department.

Fox plans to spin off its news and sports channels, including its flagship Fox News channel, into a newly listed company.

Fox shareholders will also receive shares in Disney as part of the deal.

Shareholders in both companies signed off on the cash-and-stock transaction at meetings on Friday.

After ten years, the MCU has all of it's toys to play with.

What's interesting is that the latest X-men films have disappeared completely from the release slate which has led some people to believe they've been cancelled completely despite being finished. If that's the case, I can see the first hint of the MCU X-men appearing in the 2019 Marvel films. I predict that the first x-men to appear will be Storm in Black Panther 2.

Quite exciting although it's not good news for the industry as Disney's monopoly is only gonna get worse from here on out.

Yeah not really a fan of what Disney has done with Star Wars tbh... a creative monopoly will be terrible for us in the West. We had that growing up in my generation in the US to a degree with our broad-stroke censorship... but Disney was always challenged to give us a great tale & drama that went outside of the box... now they've become too coveted in our culture.

Oh well, I will just go further towards foreign/india media for all my movies, entertainment etc... I already do for music and I've started to watch a lot of digital shows as well. I guess to some degree, it was pretty much inevitable...

In theory it means less originality (and there's isn't an awful lot of that at the moment with big-budget tentpole films) but what balances it out is the rise of streaming services and new media.

Disney and Fox are just trying to compete with the likes of Netflix, YouTube and big-technology compaines like Apple getting involved in entertainment. These types of mergers are inevitable.

I have no issue with it to be honest. Hollywood / cinema / blockbuster type movies are what they are, they're never going to be high-brow... Pure escapism and I enjoy them for what they are. Frankly, most of the supposedly Oscar worthy Hollywood stuff is pretentious trash.

So I say keep the blockbusters coming bigger and better. There are still plenty of independent movies that are actually interesting and good coming out, on all sorts of platforms, and that will continue and most likely increase in both quantity and quality as streaming becomes more and more "the norm" over live TV.

My only real concern is that the MCU will become too busy if they start introducing a tonne of mutants. It's already a little crowded.

I would love for Disney/Marvel to put together a good quality Xmen TV series though. We've had a few spin off style ones with minor characters... But a "Proper" one with the core Xmen / the actual school would be awesome.

Disney acquiring a lot of new assets also means substantial IP expansions within its theme parks too. We’re already seeing a mass Marvel presence appearing, and the new Star Wars areas opening on both coasts of America, and also a watered down version in Paris in a few years.
It gives them room to manoeuvre in the market especially in Orlando where the biggest competition, Universal is expected to open a fourth gate by 2023.

They've pretty much trashed Star Wars though... I hope they give the new stuff to more competent people .

The core Star Wars audience is not kids anymore, they need to realise that and make their Star Wars universe a bit darker with more impact. Likewise, I feel like there scope for the Xmen franchise being aimed at a slightly older audience than the overall MCU (though there will inevitably be crossovers).

I'm wondering if they'll retcon Scarlet Witch / Quicksilver as mutants? It would be quite easy to do so... They could discover that their powers aren't FROM the mind stone, just that the experiments with it unlocked their latent Mutant abilities that they already had (which would explain why they were the only candidates that the experiments worked on). Both characters are kind of big in the Xmen universe so it would be a bit odd if they had to be kept as "enhanced humans" rather than mutants. I also can't see them not somehow bringing Quicksilver back if they do indeed combine the universes?

Then again, they may well keep them separate franchises for the time being.

They are getting greedy

I mean this year the movies they are releasing

Dumbo/Aladdin/the lion King/toy story 4/frozen 2

Then you have any marvel, or star wars film I'm not a particular fan of those though(loved star wars when I was a kid but it's a bit boring now and I can't keep up with the marvel stuff)

Imagine how much money they are gonna make it one year

The Disney releases in the schedule are mostly just Marvel, Pixar, remakes and Star Wars.

Three years until a new Star Wars film after Episode 9, then every two years. Four Avatar sequels starting December 2021.

They're going to make billions this year, with Avengers, Toy Story 4, Lion King, Frozen 2 and Star Wars.

How many live action films are they going to make though?

I mean yeah it was kinda cute to start off with and enjoyed some of them but to make a live action of every film is going a bit far what have we had so far?

Snow white and the huntsman
Alice in wonderland
Cinderella
Maleficent
Jungle Book
Beauty and the beast
Dumbo
Aladdin
Lion King

Am I forgetting any?

I know Mulan and Hunchback are being made

So I'm hoping we get

Little Mermaid and Pocahontas

And erm...can't think of any more but I see Cruella is in the pipeline on the schedule that will be good. Ursula needs her own film too!!!

--Much-- better that way and I'd even push it to 3 full years between movies. It's a franchise that needs thought and hype, not constant releases.

Is anyone even all that interested in ONE Avatar sequel at this point? I mean it was an OK film but the major draw was it being a "flagship" 3D movie and there are hundreds of 3D movies now... plus 3D didn't even really take off all that massively .

Sure
but because of Star War Movies
pushing "Avatar 2 "
back to 2021 December
is wrong.

I don't have a problem with the live action remakes so far but that will probably change this year as I'm not keen on the look of Lion King (Why does that even exist?) or Aladdin (Guy Ritchie is a hack). I loved the live action Beauty and the Beast.

Oh and Snow White and the Hunstman isn't a Disney film, it's not a remake of the animation.

Hunchback will probably be delayed or cancelled all together now, I expect. It was never a huge success for Disney despite how good it was and now Notre Dame is out of commission for at least a few years, I can't see them forging ahead with it.

I can't imagine they'd touch Pocahontas again, it's too much of a powder keg these days.
