Bryan Singer: Director fired from Freddie Mercury film

The director of the new Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, has been fired due to "unreliable behaviour".

In a statement, Twentieth Century Fox said Bryan Singer was no longer the director of the film.

A source told the BBC the main reason for the firing was "a pattern of unreliable behaviour on the set". They added that the studio felt the move was in the best interest of the film.

The film will tell the story of the late Queen frontman's life.

Singer had clashed with lead actor Rami Malek and failed to show up for filming on multiple occasions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The announcement comes days after the studio said production had been suspended so Singer could deal with "a personal health matter".

The director's representative said it was "a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family".

His representative has not yet responded to the latest development.


Filming has been taking place in the UK, with Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello and Gwilym Lee starring as Queen's other members.

The movie is still expected to be released in December 2018 as planned.

As well as directing, Singer is listed as a co-producer, alongside Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, among others.

Singer's past directing credits include The Usual Suspects, four X-Men movies and Superman Returns.

His past is somehow even murkier than Jimmy Savile's, I'm not sure how it's taken this long for the post-Weinstein stuff to catch up with him (and even then, tenuously).

Murkier than SAVILE seems like an exaggeration... Savile really was a special case. It seems like he "kept it legal" but definitely has a thing for young-looking boys aged between 18 and 21 (but looking younger). Apparently he's quite notorious. Probably not far behind Savile but not quite at that level!

Also interesting... Is that he seems to have spent quite a lot of time socialising with Kevin Spacey (and has worked with him a few times). Spacey seems to have regularly attended Singer's "parties" which basically involved a lot of these young-looking adult men, and a lot of drugs.

Also the articles I've seen about this go back years and mention Kevin Spacey extensively ... Strange that all of this was already out there but no one was really paying attention until recently!

"Unreliable behaviour" could mean any number of things tbh. In the case of Josh Trank, it was just being a total smeghead who ruined a house and whose erratic behaviour meant Fantastic Four had to be salvaged by someone else.

Then there was the accusation made around the time he was filming XMen - a teenage kid made an allegation against him, but pretty much the entire cast and crew of XMen said he was filming in Canada at the time of the accusation, so the case got dropped. It's worth pointing out that the guy who made the accusation has since withdrawn other ones...
But then, given the Hollywood climate, he might have been forced to withdraw them.

Bryan Singer was sued Thursday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old boy on a yacht in Seattle in 2003.

The alleged victim, Cesar Sanchez-Guzman, accused the director of forcing him to perform oral sex. According to the suit, which was filed in state court in Seattle, the director then forcibly performed oral sex on Sanchez-Guzman and then anally penetrated him.

Later, Singer approached Sanchez-Guzman and told him he was a producer and could help him get into acting if he did not say anything about the incident, the suit alleges.

“He then told Cesar that no one would believe him if he ever reported the incident, and that he could hire people who are capable of ruining someone’s reputation,” the lawsuit states.

The yacht was owned by Lester Waters, a wealthy tech investor “who frequently hosted parties for young gay males in the Seattle area,” the suit alleges.

A Singer representative said he “categorically denies these allegations and will vehemently defend this lawsuit to the very end.”

The suit comes just three days after Singer was fired from “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the biopic of Freddy Mercury now shooting in London. Singer was repeatedly absent from the set and did not return after Thanksgiving, causing a shutdown in production. After he was fired, Singer said he was unable to make it to the set because he was caring for an ailing parent. The studio named Dexter Fletcher as his replacement Wednesday.

because the defense can say "Sanchez-Guzman was on a boat for gay parties, what did he expect?" Obviously that's not my view, but these little details can sink a case.
