Default A question for Londoners about Chiswick

Three family-based sitcoms (My Family, Outnumbered, Not Going Out) are all based in Chiswick. My perception of Chiswick is that it's fairly nice, and a part of London where it's believable that lower-middle class jobs would be able to have a decently sized house, and not be unbelievable for the show? That way the show can be set in London (not a part which is ****), but the characters can still live in a nice house without being millionaires?

It seems to be a rapidly up and coming area with lots of footballers chosing to stay there...everytime I am in Chiswick repairing tvs it is a big house or a new build.ŕ

lower middle-class?
maybe 20 years ago
Chiswick is far more expensive now
it is a typical middle-class neighbourhood or it used to be

Oh yeah? I assumed the shows were going for a "relatable part of London for Joe Public who lives elsewhere", where should they have used?

I guess for My Family it's believable, as he was dentist + it started about 20 years ago + they'd owned the house for about ten years at the start of the show.
Outnumbered, started about 10 years ago + he's a teacher + they lived there a while, plus they were often having money troubles.

Not Going Out - he sells cars, she's a stay at home mum and headhunter, so I guess that's the least believable! Unless her rich parents bought it outright for them.

My ex-in-laws lived their for 30 years and my eldest was born there. Its a posh part of town but like all of London its fringed by awful areas all around it (Acton, Shepherds Bush, Hammersmith). The inlaws had a 5 bed in Beverly road and its now worth about 2 mill, give or take.

Pretty soon there will be no real Londoners left, they'll all have been priced out. The only peolple who can afford to live there are the rich, and those who live in social housing or are on benefits. I remember when you couldn't give away houses in Stratford now they're marketed like this: http://www.telfordhomes.london/micro...SAAEgKcu_D_BwE

Local, working class people were shafted and shifted. Shameful.

I assumed Shepards Bush was nice, as in AbFab people sometimes ask if Eddy's house is there
Spoiler:

HOLLAND PARK!

Shepherd's Bush is okay, a bit rough in areas though (where isn't?) but it's got Westfield so it's a convenient place to live and it's quite a good location

The Bush

I lived there (off the Goldhawk Rd) and its ok but not at night, Brackenbury Village is a lovely bit - like most of London really nice bits and then some well dodgy bits all cheek by jowl. Holland Park is lovely.

I want to go to Richmond Park this year, I've heard great things about the area there and I've never been to the other two, but SW is pretty lovely in general

SW and West are the 'best' areas to live imo, the only thing I'd say is avoid NE (not that I've been there but a lot of crime happens there) and some of the North too. NW (dependant on area), SE and East are really nice areas to live as well. The South is okay too but I think the transport isn't quite so good.
