We have two genders, the default position should be both are represented, simple as.

Men got used to being the privileged gender and some hate making room for women. Sad.
The equality is inevitable and dinosaurs will die out or evolve

Would you put the "need" for representation above the need for a good product?

imo if the best team only has one gender, it should be chosen. If the best team has both genders, that should be chosen. But the gender balance shouldn't be a deciding factor, and I'm yet to hear a reason it should be.

Then I guess we should keep it as a meritocracy and leave it at that.

That might be true, but most of the best new comedy is written by men.

I'm so sorry for being born a straight, White man.

Can you ever forgive me for this?

Why do you see equality as an existential threat?
It's not about persecution of straight white males but about giving everybody equal rights

Everybody has equal rights, the law of the land says so.

What are you actually fighting for?

Think about that one, I'm off to watch a film, be back in 2-3 hours.

So some men don't want to work with women and the head of itv is the trouble maker?

The only question that should be asked is 'how much money will they make us?' Discriminating based on gender is just wrong.
Because Monty Python only worked because they were all men?

I find funny things funny, my sense of humour doesn't evaluate the gender of the person writing/performing the comedy before finding it funny.

All history tells us is men were the ones in all of the privileged positions being allowed to play their material to the masses.

No, and that's obviously not what I meant.

There could be an amazing comedy writing team, poised to make their pitch for ITV ... but they wouldn't even be considered, due to their gender.

Discrimination.

...she wants comedy collaborations with males and females so that the humour will attract different audiences...to make it more inclusive and more diverse....and not to exclude or have it pigeon holed into a type of humour that she feels would be mainly male oriented....and would possibly restrict the audience...it seems a reasonable mindset tbh and will hopefully produce some good and diverse comedy...as oppose to the ‘one kind of joke’ stuff she feels is being produced atm by all Male comedy teams...

Writer Brona C Titley, who works on Celebability, told the festival: “If you have the same type of writers in terms of race or sexual orientation or gender, then you’re only getting one kind of joke.”

It's not discrimination at all.

She's had a very male centric slate of commissions, so now wants to broaden the range of content so is requesting a more gender balanced input. It's the entire opposite of discrimination. She hasn't put a big sign up saying "No Men!!"

More TV execs need to take a long hard look at their entire output and see what is repetitive and very samey and work towards broadening the range of voices being given the opportunity to add their voices to the choir.

More diversity is only a good thing, not just for opening up opportunities for more talent behind the scenes, but also giving the viewer a wider range of products to enjoy.

If everyone writing for TV comes from the same backgrounds/experiences, you're going to get an extremely vanilla output.

In 1975 John Cleese and Connie Booth wrote Fawlty Towers together. Nobody complained.

In 1997 Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne wrote The Royle Family together. Nobody complained.

In 2007 James Corden and Ruth Jones wrote Gavin and Stacey together. Nobody complained.

These all happened naturally, and comedy, written and performed by men and women has been happening for almost the entirety of television. nobody was forced into it.

This is just 4th wave feminism in action and nothing else.

You're confusing partnerships with teams. Teams are almost never chosen as a bunch of mates. Never watched the Larry Sanders Show?
