Not to be a nay-sayer LT but I don't think this is actually true... Technicolor was available before production started but using Technicolor was insanely expensive compared to black and white film,so because there was going to be this magical transition anyway (between the real world and Oz) they decided to film the beginning and end without colour to save money, and for creative reasons emphasising the contrast between the plain ol' Kansas and the magical Oz "over tha rainbow", etc.

You couldn't get the same effect now because colour is obviously the norm, but I imagine it was quite a "moment" in those old cinemas when the audience was watching a normal B&W movie and then all of a sudden it fades to black and comes back in vibrant hues

If you want to do the countdown threads Shaun, then that's fine by me.

So I was thinking, if you want to send your top 20 films for the first heat, which will be a combination of films from the 1930s and 1960s, then you can do so now if you wish. However, I'll give you a week or so to send them in, so there's no rush. We'll do 1 heat a week.

If you haven't seen 20 films from this era, then just list as many as you've seen and liked, It doesn't matter if you don't get 20.

Send your list, ranked in order from 1 to 20 by pm to me by Friday and then Shaun can decide when he wants to do the first countdown thread. Then we do heat 2.

I hope you all understand me? I have a very strong Hul accent

Quick tip, just type in Google, "films of 1966" (or whichever year you want to research) or maybe type in "best films of" and then the year.

You might just find something you forgot about.

No. The opening was filmed in sepia-tone and Oz was filmed in colour in order to make Oz appear more magical.

Sounds good. Hitchcock, Hawks and Ford are God's. Wilder is one of the greats, Not got into Sturgess yet.

Don't forget this first round I just want your top 20, in order from best to least, of films from a combination of the 1930s and 1960s films.

So, clarify for me. Am I voting 10 from the 30s and 10 from the 60s? 20 and 20 from each??? Or just 20 across both decades without it having to be evenly weighted.

Working on a list rt now

No! You can choose all 20 from the 1960s if you want, just pick your 20 from both decades combined.

Number of lists I've received so far?

Zero

Which I'm taking as a good thing, it means you're all thinking hard about this. If I still haven't received a list by Thursday, then I'll panic.

Don't forget to send your list by Friday evening.

Remember, if you can't make a list of 20, just list as many as you can.

I think having to private message someone, rather than post on the thread, puts people off taking part.

I can see James' point but I think the main drawback at the moment is merely the decade... I don't think anyone outside of perhaps 10 members who actively use the Films section could name more than 5 movies they enjoy from the 30s.

(Also I've been away all week, sorry for not voting yet)

Yes. What Shaun said is true. I bet if you asked for 80s and 90s films you would get a much bigger response.

I actually love the much older films.
I find the acting more convincing.
Especially in Bette Davis films.
I adore that woman.

I had a list of movies but I got confused about how to send them to be honest. I think Shaun also has a point as I struggled with the 30's a lot!
