For some reason I assumed that part of the story was going to be factual so spent the whole film waiting for the murders to happen and wondering how it had anything to do with the main plot but then that twist ending happened and it suddenly made sense. Also made me realise why it had an 18 rating
So glad you enjoyed mate! So excited for my viewing tomorrow!

Yeah the Bruce Lee scene is rubbing people up the wrong way BUT it’s in Cliff’s memory/mind isn’t it, it’s fantasy. As is the whole movie. People need to chill!

So is Charles manson even in this film? Because its that that puts me off wanting to see it as he was into Satan worship and stuff and I won't watch things like that. The rest of the film looks good

So I finally watched this last night, and I've gotta say this is a strong contender for the best film of the year so far. I was gonna review this last night, but I was too tired after the film and slept when I came home. (I had watched it late)

Spoiler:

Dicaprio and Pitt were both phenomenal in their roles. This is possibly Pitt's best performance in his entire career. The film focused more on their characters than Sharon Tate. Margot was good, despite her limited screentime. She was a side character if anything. The person who 'stole the show' for me was the little actress girl called Trudi, Rick's co-star. It amazes me that she was able to keep up with Dicaprio. She's going places that's for sure. Bruce Dern and Timothy Olyphant were also great in their roles. Dakota Fanning was also good, really creepy and sinister.

Spoiler:

The action was great, especially towards the end. That was classic Tarantino bloody over the top violence we all know and love. My favourite scene in the whole film was definitely when Cliff was at the Spahn Ranch with all those hippies, and he demanded to see George. It felt like something out of a horror scene for me. The Bruce Lee scene was also brilliant and hilarious. That didn't disappoint

Spoiler:

I was also surprised at Michael Madsen's cameo at the beginning. I thought his scene was cut from the final film?

Overall, this film is easily a 10/10 masterpiece for me and possibly Tarantino's greatest film. I'm watching it again on Friday.

Spoiler:

He was barely in the movie at all - he just had about a minute of screen time. Tarantino focused on The Family instead.

Literally, top 3 Tarantino for me even after just one viewing. I absolutely loved it, had a smile on my face from start to end.

Will do a proper review later but yeah, WOW! Want to see it again!

Glad you enjoyed it buddy. I know how long you were waiting for this and I would've hated for you to have been disappointed.

It's a top 3 Tarantino for me too.

It's definitely gonna be nominated (and should win) a lot of Oscars.

My predictions:

1. Best Picture
2. Best Director
3. Best Actor (I honestly think both Dicaprio and Pitt will be nominated in this category)
4. Best Supporting Actress for Margot Robbie
5. Best Original Screenplay
6. Best Costume
7. Best Sound Mixing

If anything, I’d be more upset if Brad doesn’t get at least a nomination (and then hopefully win) for this. I think this is my favourite role I’ve ever seen him in honestly! Character suited him perfectly.

The soundtrack is just phenomenal, I haven’t seen that kind of “wall of sound” in a movie where there’s constant music since like Dazed &Confused or American Grafitti. The radio station/music really is a character in the movie, it’s always there.

Need to order it! So many tunes stuck in my head.

Well, where do I begin?

Spoiler:

From the moment the movie began I started beaming, was just like that instant "vibe" you got from the likes of Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown and I still can't stop thinking about it. Tarantino, I feel, is at his best and has the most fun working with a more modern setting like this as oppose to some of his Western work and Inglorious (as much as I love that movie).

The main thing for me is that you really did get sucked in to this whole world of 1969 Los Angeles. It's probably the best/most accurate "era piece" I've seen in a long, long time. The cars, the streets, fashion, UGH. It's as if the little insignificant details within the scenes, like the appliances Rick uses, the beer mugs he drinks out of, the tins in Cliff's cupboards where he keeps Brandy's food... All of this is vital to your "immersive" experience. I can honestly say I didn't want the movie to end and I could just watch Rick/Cliff and Sharon drive around the city for hours on end.

There were times when I felt like certain scenes were maybe a tad too short, not much, but I felt like the Charles Manson scene could have been expanded a bit (which was originally the plan it seems judging from a new TV spot trailer online where he visits the Cielo Drive guest house and so on), Sharon in the bookstore being another. BUT I don't think that hinders the progression at all. In contrast to that, I also felt there were scenes that went on a tad too long, not that I minded, just a feeling!

I don't feel like Sharon was insignificant at all. Okay she doesn't say all that much but I felt that her inclusion was just right and did the job - showcasing her as a lovely, beautiful young lady enjoying the Hollywood life and full of wide-eyed optimism at what should have been a long, successful career. Her presence was more than enough to get the message over and link the plots together. She was like a cool breeze throughout the movie, adding to the melancholic vibe of the film whilst still projecting glamour and personifying this burgeoning "New Hollywood".

How scarily sinister was Dakota Fanning!? Hard to believe it was her, loved her interaction with Cliff. That whole Spahn Ranch segment was straight-up horror flick. How it all just instantly turned sinister when Cliff mentioned he knew George...

I surprisingly loved the whole mini-episode of Lancer in the middle, very, very entertaining and Rick's mess-up and trailer outburst were golden (maybe Oscar-worthy). I was laughing like mad at when he forgot his last line and you could hear the director or whoever screaming "JUST SAY THE ****ING LINE!!" Timothy Olyphant played his role well, did anyone notice the little Easter Egg of him with the motorbike (Google the man he played and all will be revealed)? Luke Perry's (RIP) short stint was great and Julia Butters (Trudi) was incredible.

Have to give a shout-out to Damien Lewis, I was sceptical about his look as Steve McQueen on the billboards but he was the spit of him! Had the voice and mannerisms down to a T. Short cameo yes, but still effective.

The ending was all I could have wished and more. Classic Tarantino violence but this time particularly the receivers were due their comeuppance which made it all the more enjoyable. Baby killer Susan Atkins getting burnt to a crisp with a flamethrower, sounds fair.

My mind's racing and I've missed other bits that stood out I know but just know that I LOVED this movie. I'll sleep on it and remember stuff again tomorrow. But if Brad doesn't get some big award noms for this I'll be gutted, Cliff was just such a compelling character.

If it's true the 4 hour extended cut of this is coming to Netflix then bring it on, because I could "live" in this whole world for hours on end and would love to see all of the extra bits and longer scenes.

Excellent!

Also just twigged that this thread has 20 pages!? Jeez

Spoiler:

I liked Brad in it alot but his performance imo wasn't award worthy, Leo's definitely was, I think it was more obvious that Brads wasn't when you have him standing with Leo through the movie

They both did an equally phenomenal job tbh. I've never thought much of Pitt's acting skills in the past. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good actor, but he hasn't had a performance that's wowed me until this film. He completely disappears into his role.

They both should be nominated for Best Actor imo.

Nah, like I said I like Brad and I liked how he played the part but it wasn't anything phenomenal imo

Just seen this and loved it. I actually had no idea about any of the background so didn't know anything about Sharon Tate or the Manson family (had just heard the names) so reading up on everything puts a different and a bit more tragic perspective on it

Really glad you loved it MTVN! Yeah I thought this is what some would do if they just went in totally oblivious. I'm sure many, many people of all ages have heard of Charles Manson but not necessarily what he did/his followers did so can imagine the "shock" many would get when they see what happened to Sharon Tate because of him/his Family.

I really need to catch this again before it leaves the cinema.

I ALSO would really love to get my hands on one of the HUGE like 3ftx4ft posters up in the displays at my local Odeon for this movie, does anyone know how/if I can go about getting one once the film has finished showing?

I really need to catch this again before it leaves the cinema.

I ALSO would really love to get my hands on one of the HUGE like 3ftx4ft posters up in the displays at my local Odeon for this movie, does anyone know how/if I can go about getting one once the film has finished showing?
In my cinema they put posters they're finished with in a box and people can take them. You should just ask at the cinema though, a poster from this film will probably be in demand

Ah really, I'll have to just go there and ask then. Will try and pop next week see if they'll keep one for me or something. Thanks Niamh.
