My reason for this is that the entire point of the Joker is that he is an "avatar of chaos". There is no how or why to him, there is no complex trauma behind him, he just IS, because he enjoys it, the violence and chaos, for no reason that anyone would understand.

It's the same reason that while I love Ledger's performance in Dark Knight Rises, he isn't my "best joker" in terms of the lore. But the Nolan films in general are really more interpretations of than representations of Batman lore (Batman is underskilled and underpowered, the tech / Batmobile etc is a more "realistic" take, etc.)

But yeah. I haven't seen Joker and it might be a great standalone film (I've read mixed reactions) BUT no matter what, I stand by my opinion that explaining the Joker ruins the Joker.

In the canon comics, the Joker's real name is never given; some elseworlds and movies call him Jack Napier though.

I don't think this is THE Joker because THE Joker started out as a criminal called Red Hood (One). He fell into a vat of chemicals which drove him insane, and bleached his skin and greened his hair. So it's not clown makeup he wears, the chemicals literally turned him into a 'clown'.

This Joker is it's own stand alone version of the character with no ties to the comics apart from obvioiusly Gotham and the Waynes and stuff so he could be this versions actual joker but I think I prefer the idea of him influencing the real one but hey that's the great thing about this movie is that it's always open for interception

Both of us absolutely loved it, it's really brilliant. I can definitely see all of the Scorcese influence in this, it's like King of Comedy (De Niro's character in this could easily have been modern-day Rupert Pupkin!) meets Taxi Driver meets some sort of more unsettling, psychological horror. Phenomenal performance by Phoenix (as usual). It was everything I hoped and MORE!

Probably the best comic book or "superhero movie" (I use that term extremely loosely for this) ever.

I'm still haunted by his performance. It was so brilliant. Really something special. I hope he gets that Oscar.

Very good, although not near one of the best films ever.

It was very Taxi Driver like. So it was apt to have Travis Bickle in it.

Enjoyed it, and will likely watch it again in the future.

It's an excellent film that I'll never watch again. It's challenging, unpleasant, uncomfortable and incredibly well made and it reminded me a lot of 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' which I have similar feelings about.

It should really dominate the awards season but given the typical media treatment of DC properties (and it's particularly unjust disdain for this film) I don't think it will.

I don't know how much my tastes reflect general audiences, but I couldn't stand any of the DC movies apart from Wonder Woman and Shazam, and Aquaman was okay. For the shows I really like Arrow, I'm mehh about Titans, I like Watchmen, and I don't like Batwoman. (not yet seen whatever ones I've not mentioned)

I never really read reviews, so if that in any way correlates with the public, or especially awards-deciders Joker might be in luck

Apparently the steps the Joker danced down in the Bronx have become quite a tourist attraction! That could be a boon for the area - put up some nice pubs/cafes/restaurants/hotels/apartments, make it more upmarket

Yeah and the local residents aren't happy about it!

They're worried what you said may come true and they don't want that, they want The Bronx to stay authentically "rough around the edges" and sort of old school New York, no fancy stuff.

There would be a magical irony in Joker - a movie about societal rejection and disenfranchisement - sparking a small gentrification in The Bronx .

However it would be a terrible business prospect; the film is only just out, it's not going to be drawing tourists in a year, let alone in 5.

Aquaman was robbed of a lot of technical nods, the film is a 7/10 but it deserved recognition in the technical categories.

Wonder Woman was amazing but was undercut by Greta Gerwig, sadly.

There's always been an imbalance of how the media looks at the MCU and DC, DC have had missteps but there's a fair few MCU films that are at best, mediocre that never really got branded as such. You get more clicks from positive MCU stories and a lot more clicks about negative DC stories than good ones which is why Joker's pretty much been the victim of a massive push by the media to push it into the mould of a story they want it to be.

Joker director Todd Phillips has revealed that he originally filmed a scene that confirmed Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck didn't kill Zazie Beetz's character in the movie.

While the filmmakers have previously made it clear that Sophie Dumond (Beetz) survived, Phillips has now said that the film was initially going to feature a cutaway to Sophie watching Arthur's climactic interview with former idol Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro).

Considering his talk show appearance happened a couple of days after she'd discovered an uninvited Arthur in her apartment – and it hauntingly transpired that he'd been imagining their romance – the shot would have proved that neither she, nor her daughter, had met their untimely end in that instance.

Ultimately however, Phillips decided to cut the short scene from the movie because he wanted to maintain the film's narrative structure and also ensure that it was always told from the Clown Prince of Crime's point of view.

"He doesn't kill her, definitively," Phillips said during an interview with IndieWire. "As the filmmaker and the writer, I am saying he doesn't kill her. We like the idea that it's almost like a litmus test for the audience to say, 'How crazy is he?'

A bit late but Joker is the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, beating the previous record holder, Deadpool 2.

Joker isn't nearly done tearing through box office records.

The DC comic book film has officially become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in box office history, having grossed $788 million, The Hollywood Reporter writes. This breaks the $783 million worldwide record previously held by Deadpool, unadjusted for inflation. Deadpool 2 also grossed $785 million worldwide, but this includes a subsequent re-release.

After hitting theaters mired in controversy, Joker has been continuously impressing at the box office, getting started by shattering the record for biggest opening weekend ever for an October release. Now, it's racking up worldwide grosses on par with a major superhero action blockbuster, despite the film being a slower-paced character study in the vein of Taxi Driver, and despite not even having a release in China, where superhero films often rack up a huge chunk of change.

In fact, Joker, which reportedly cost about $60 million to make, will take in more than $400 million in profits, Deadline reports. That would make it nearly as profitable as Avengers: Infinity War, Deadline notes, a film that grossed far more but also had a significantly higher budget.

Now the question becomes whether Joker, set to surge past $800 million, can actually break $1 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming only the second non-Disney movie of the year to do so. Box office prognosticators once thought that impossible, but Warner Bros. may have the last laugh.
