Cavill is a gamer, and it shows here because his performance here is very clearly based on Geralt from the games . He seems a little sullen ( ) though... Geralt has a sort of muted, dry humour that I hope they've also captured.

From all over the place, a lot of reviewers were talking it up as the next game of thrones. I read that there was a bit of controversy about one review from a publication though as the reviewer admitted that they only watched the first and last episodes or something but gave it a bad review regardless.

I'll judge for myself. Metacritic reviews are becoming increasingly dubious and out of touch tbh.

I thought the first episode was brilliant. The Game of Thrones-inspired cinematography paired with numerous interesting plots that weren't overly complicated (for a pilot episode) really made it for me.

I only saw the reviews after I had watched the pilot, and was absolutely baffled that it was rated so poorly. I thought they'd be lapping this up.

Hate watching things based on video games it normally is soulless action.

Does this actually have a plot?

The games are based on a book series, and the show is based on the books also as source material, not on the games.

Also the Witcher games are very plot-heavy anyway.

Not you suggesting that video games don't have stories when there's narrative experiences in games that Films and TV can never hope to match

I didn't.

I meant movies/shows adapted from videos games (from the ones I've seen) do so without thinking much of a plot.

I'm so happy for Henry Cavill, I heard an internet rumour that he had a "standing order" with his agent that if a Witcher adaption was ever made, he wanted to be in it, in any capacity <3 and apparently he'd frequently ask if there was any news on one coming

I watched the first episode, I quite enjoyed it. The script is clunky in places (the exposition is particularly painful) but it's a good start.

Oh yeah, Hollywood is typically incapable of adapting video games well which is dumb considering it should be easier with every passing year given that games are becoming more cinematic.

Netflix is pretty much the only one to create good video game adaptations (I know Witcher isn't one but it wouldn't have been adapted were it not for the games). Maybe the key to good video game adaptions are adapting them as TV shows instead.

About halfway through this now, and, from somebody with little background knowledge of the series, I love the ambiguity of it all. I'm really interested to see how the storylines merge.

I've only watched the pilot so far and I'm feeling positive about it.

I'm not sure on the actress playing Ciri so far, but the show is less GOT than I was expecting which is good considering the Games (and I'm gonna presume that the Books are the same) aren't meant to be GOT.

I loved GOT so I'm not meaning to come across as a hater.

I've never read the books but have played the games, being "morally grey" was certainly always a big part of it. Moreso in the first two than the third one to be fair, where Geralt is more obviously "lightside", but that tend to be the "big picture" good vs evil stuff - when it comes to the "human storylines" he's always politically neutral (and often playing one side off against the other, whilst working for both).

I finished it a couple of days ago. I think the second half of the season is a real mess but I think Season 2 will be very good.

Spoiler:

The timeline is a real godamn mess and while I appreciate what they tried to do, they just didn't manage the three timelines very well and the reveals that most of Geralt's storyline takes place in the past and that, in the present, he's pretty much always in close proximity to Ciri just didn't feel rewarding and the way they brought Yennefer and Geralt into present day was just clumsy.

I would have honestly enjoyed this season more if Ciri wasn't in it, I think they should have used this season to build up Yennefer and Geralt more. I loved Yennefer but I had a problem with how they told us about her journey but never showed it. She went from being this character that couldn't do anything to being a bad ass witch bitch without showing us the journey, only her motivations while they settled for telling us everything else.

Given their chemistry, I would have loved Season 1 to be entirely about how Geralt and Yennefer met and interacted throughout the years (while setting up Ciri's plotline). They could have had the first two episodes of Season 2 dedicated to Ciri's plotline (You could cut out the elf boy and the magical forest bits since it had little relevance to the plot) and then move full speed ahead with the threat of Nilfgaard.

I did like the series a lot, I think it's brimming with potential but the format ultimately let it down. Hopefully now they don't have to **** about with timeline ****, they can focus on developing the Nilfgaard threat (did they ever mention the guy with the feather helmet's name?) and develop an overall storyline.

Finished it it was very good.

The casting of Triss and especially Fringella was a bad choice however.

Geralt casting was perfect.
Ciri and Yennefer castings I thought we’re good, although perhaps Ciri should have been a year or two younger considering she’ll be an adult by season 3. Dandelion casting was perfect also.

Fringella was never black? And the actress was terrible.

Likewise Triss is a favourite and is known for her red hair - is it really that difficult to dye her hair?

Triss only has bright red hair in the games, this series takes more inspiration from the books which describe her hair as being more chestnut.

Fringilla is definitely a character that can be racebended since nothing I've seen makes out her race to be important to her character, most of her descriptions focuses on her eyes and short hair.

It does mention streaks of red in her hair however, and people believed her hair to be red even before she appeared in the game due to this, as fans drew pictures of what the characters they believed looked like. It just seems like she’s a completely different character.

Fringella actress was very wooden and not very believable - she’s meant to be evil and have a presence but she was completely forgettable

It’s weird that they cast these two, considering the Renfri actress who was only in an episode blew both these other actresses out the park - everyone online is in complete agreement also, so it’s not like they didn’t have actresses capable.

I didn't find either of them bad, tbh. Triss wasn't given much opportunity to do anything this series so it's difficult to judge the actress with what she was given and I thought Fringilla's actress played the role of a fanatic well enough.
