I obviously didn't mean that. But hiring for diversity does happen, and it shouldn't.

Something else that shouldn't happen is hiring based on legacy - if anyone but Ben Elton had written that crappy health and safety "comedy" from a few years back, it wouldn't be made.

Just like how old white guys usually benefit from being hired based on their names.

Neither things should happen, as both can result in someone getting a job they might not be right for.

I was referring to the people LT points out as "jobs that don't go to the best person".

I.e. a woman or person of colour I don't like therefore I'll take that as confirmation they were hired for their race and/or genitals and nothing else.

It seemed like LT was referring to cases where the best person literally wasn't chosen, and the decision was made based on inconsequential surface traits. I doubt you actually think he was saying women or minorities are never the best person.

The BBC has diversity commitments, so in some cases that's how women and minorities will have gotten their jobs. That is undeserved.

Sometimes people get jobs because they who-you-know their way in. That is undeserved.

Sometimes people get jobs through nepotism. That is undeserved.


Or a woman, a minority, an industry veteran, or the kid of someone famous will write a great script/perform a great audition/be really funny ... And get hired. That is deserved.

Having more women and/or minorities isn't a good or bad thing. What matters is how good they are at their job.
