THE hotel where Johnny Vegas comedy Benidorm is filmed was wrecked by a blaze yesterday.
Flames raged through the Sol Pelicanos Ocas after the fire began in the kitchens and guests were evacuated. The third series of ITV1’s Benidorm — starring comic Johnny Vegas, 38 — is currently in production. Much of the hotel will need to be rebuilt following the blaze. But show chiefs hope production won’t be affected — as it is shot during low season at the Spanish resort. A spokesman said: “We are working on the third series, but filming isn’t scheduled to start until January. We’re expecting the hotel will be up and running by then.” Witnesses said one person was brought out of the burning building on a stretcher. An onlooker said: “There were clouds of smoke coming from the hotel. The fire quickly spread to the lobby. “Guests were evacuated and lined up on the pavement. Ambulances and fire engines were trying to bring the blaze under control.” |

Dear all,
I'm the Communication Manager of Sol Meliá, the hotel company owner of the hotel Sol Pelicanos Ocas, and I'm writting for clarifying this information. I would like to underline that the information posted here in incorrect, as, yes, there was a fire at the hotel's kitchen (in one of it's ovens) and the hotel was evacuated because of the smoke that created that fire, but the hotel went back to normality a few hours later and won't definitively need to be rebuilt as the building didn't suffer any damage, only the oven I mentioned before. Regarding the person that was brought out of the building on a stretcher, I must underline that this person just suffered from a panic atack, probably for seeing the black smoke coming out of the kitchen, and received the medical cares he needed, but his life wasn't at risk at any moment. We are very sorry for the inconvenience our guests could suffer at this moment, but we can assure that the hotel is nowadays working with complete normality. Thank you very much for your attention. Best regards. Laura del Amo |
