Default Have horror films always been like this?

I just watched ‘The Unborn’ in the hope it might be a bit different, but it strikes me every horror film post The Ring (US version) has pretty much adhered to the same set-up, i.e. girl (normally very attractive) gets spooked by something nasty, runs around it a gloomy atmosphere, her boyfriend and well-meaning female friend both get killed by the spook and then she defeats the nasty in the climax (often saving a confused and innocent child in the process).

I really enjoyed the US versions of The Ring and The Grudge, but I’m getting a bit fed up of exactly the same script shot with a different lead actress.

Can anyone recommend any decent (and preferably recent) horror films that dare to break form?

Let's see,

The Orphanage
REC
Let the Right One In (I wouldn't class it as a horror but apparently it is. Either way it's brilliant)

I can't think of any more for the moment. It's hard to think of films that completely deviate from the formula but there are plenty that does the formula well.

I wouldn't say Let the Right One In - the main character's a little boy!

But yeah, horror films usually always have a female lead:
The Uninvited
The Unborn
The Grudge
The Ring
Darkness
The Messengers

Hmm...a few other ones, but yeah - if you really think about it the same setup is for Halloween as well, so the format's been around.

I havn't really watched a lot of horror movies because they seem to have damaging effects on me haha, but they always seem to be the same.

I always critisise the fact that is someone hears a noise, they travel to the noise & then get killed. I was shouting at all these stupid people while watching the Grudge, because the stupid chracters kept going to the house, idk why but it really infuriates me.

If the characters weren't stupid then they'd just stay away from the haunted house/monster ETC and the film would be 5 minutes long

Me and my friends found Creep absoloutley hilarious.

Also we watched a film that was set in like a farm, and it had something to do with cows and sheep and this girl that was possessed, and we couldnt stop laughing when the animals rolled off the cliff... it was a funny but TERRIBLE horror movie.

How about Wrong Turn? I found it really good, there were definetly some scary moments and suspense in that film which I liked, and the sequel is just as good

Or Jeepers Creepers

God, I hated that film. Out of all the horror films I've seen (and I flatter myself that's quite a few), that had to be the LEAST scary of all.
