Default Dizzee Rascal and Florence Welch to design Selfridges displays

Brit-winning stars Florence Welch and Dizzee Rascal are to create window displays based on their songs at London store Selfridges.

The pair are among ten artists given free rein to create their designs in a project called Sounds Of The Mind.

Other names involved include chart stars Hot Chip, Empire Of The Sun and Paloma Faith, as well as hotly tipped bands The XX and Marina And The Diamonds.

Each of the acts has personally designed their display which they have based around one of their songs.

Sounds of the Mind is a celebration of the power of the lyric and is designed to tie in with the start of the festival season when it launches in May.

Welch - who fronts Florence And The Machine has chosen to illustrate her track Cosmic Love.

She said: ''Secretly I always thought if I wasn't a singer I would like to be a window dresser. I used to do a lot of art installations at art college so this really appealed to me.

''I was really excited about the idea of seeing the lyrics to my songs portrayed in such an original and exciting way. It's about creating a representation of the song in a visual sense so what a song would look like instead of hearing it.''

Dizzee - who has chosen his hit Bonkers - said he was a regular shopper at the store and was honoured to take part.

''The concept behind this is crazy. I want people to be blown away, to see how creative we can be visually with my music,'' he said.

A spokesman for the department store said: ''This is the most ambitious windows scheme Selfridges has undertaken in years.''

Other windows have been created by singer and actress Charlotte Gainsborough as well as The Drums and The Big Pink.

They will be part of a themed sequence of displays which includes others by Selfridges' own experts. Passers-by will have a chance to guess the songs which inspired the other windows at the London store and the Manchester branch through the company's website to win £500.
