Question What is the matter with Channel 5's Big Brother Clips?

Why is it everytime they show clips of Big Brother [C4] on Channel 5 the quality looks like it's been recorded of YouTube using a Samsung?

Anyone who watched that there now on 5 News at 7 will get me.

They even had the Website URL of Channel 4 pasted down the bottom in one clip, the old 2001 Channel 4 Logo in another clip, and then just bad quality in the next.

I use to laugh at this in Summer when they showed it on Live @ Studio 5 but now we know this is going to be our new home, why do they air Big Brother clips like this?

Is it something to do with copyright laws?
Or are their editors just ******ing retarded?

This isn't a rant, more of a question as to why?
I hope this changes in Summer, or else we'll be watching Big Brother in 240p Quality.

Probably because it has 'been recorded off YouTube using a Samsung'. They mightn't have permission to show Channel 4 clips.

Or maybe they want old BB to look just like that. Something from the past.

Because channel 4 still own the rights to those images, they probably won't allow the best quality to be aired to protect their property. It's the same with posting pictures on Wikipedia. So yeah, you're right. It's stupid copyright laws.

They maybe had to pay for the better print of the clips so used the ones you can view legally from youtube.

I think it's a bit like when you see clips of US shows on the news or something and it always looks crap, must be to do with copyright

Its to do with the picture quality across different channels. Some have bigger screens than others. The best way to describe it is to take a picture on an 8 megapixel camera and then move it to a 5 or 10 megapixel camera and view it on those screens. The picture quality never looks as good when its not on the original

Channel 4 obviously gave them the footage rather than Endemol

Americans have a completely different camera system to ours, the pictures are recorded in a different format which is why everything always looks rubbish and dark. But over there it just looks normal or like ours does to us.

I love how you correct someone with complete bollocks. The only real difference with US shows is that they're recorded at 30fps instead of 25fps, but that won't make them look crap on the news etc. It IS about copyright. A documentary following Russell Brand around could only show him on Leno by filming the monitor in his dressing room. It's pathetic but copyright makes that happen all the time.

If you want to get technical, American TV is filmed and broadcast in NTSC format whilst UK TV is filmed in PAL and when you attempt to cross the two systems over you get a duller and less sharp picture, as you do with shows such as Friends and American Idol.

The two systems aren't used as much now but they form the basis for HD broadcasts, with as you say the two frame rates being the result. But even when American shows are broadcast in the UK, they still look dull unless you watch them on a HD channel when they just seem normal.

Also, its not always about copyright. Some channels freely let others use their material. Sometimes the crap picture is caused by picture compression because of the screen resolution, a good example being when broadcast on E4 in compilation shows, Big Brother clips had terrible picture quality there but no immediate copyright issues should crop up.

If it was copyright issues and they took it off youtube they wouldn't need to credit Big Brother/Channel 4/Endemol as they did, instead using 'pictures from Youtube'. BBC News do that all the time.
