Default Silly Sayings

Can you think of any silly sayings that people say?

My mum used to say things like

"Dont come running to me if you fall and break your legs"

Obviously she wasnt being serious before anyone suggests she was daft

It's actually "you can't teach your grandmother how to suck eggs." It's supposed to mean don't try to tell your elders how to do something they already know how to do/ or .... Don't be a patronising little Bastard. What the hell eggs have to do with it God knows.

My dad used to say to us as kids "Come here while I give you a slap" or "do you want a smack". He never did it by the way, but it was effective in stopping us from whatever we were doing wrong. As if you're going to say, ok give me a slap then!!!

My mum always denies she said this but one time my younger brother and I were being hilarious (immature) and she said "stop all that cheesy piffle" and that was it for us, we were HOWLING with laughter, it just sounded so ridiculous coming out of her mouth. What is cheesy piffle? Can you eat it? Where do you purchase such piffle?

Another one is "pipe down" - I got told to pipe down by my parents at dinner once despite the fact I was being hilarious (immature) so I responded by playing air-bagpipes. They tried not to laugh but I won

Not so much sayings but expressions, I find it slightly irritating when people say after somthing has been done for them, ''that is 'terribly' good of you'' or the other way, something was '''wonderfully' bad''.
Seems an odd combination of words to me to describe something.

One that is a favourite in the West of Scotland is the old, "I'll take my hand off the back of your face".

The other West of Scotland one that never fails to make me laugh is the abbreviated version of "You gave me the fright of my life".... when someone REALLY startles you and your heart misses a beat - we say it sovery quickly, that the words come out as one word ---- "frightmalife". I think only the Scots on here will understand what I mean with that one.

My mum used to come away with a belter: 'yer arse in parsley'. Never did quite get that one, but I actually use it today when someone is talking nonsense!

LOL. I laugh at those also Joey: how can something regarded as bad (or good) be prefixed by word that means the opposite!

Another one I've just thought of "we get along like a house on fire" - eh? You get along like destruction, black smoke, risk of death, intense heat, homelessness...? What? WHO MAKES THIS **** UP!?
