Not to be overly PC but times have changed a bit since you were younger. Calling anyone or any animal the N word - even as a given name - is pretty revolting. But I guess it wasn't an issue back then.
Now I'm not one who is overly PC myself, some people are a bit oversensitive about things nowadays, but sometimes a bit of sensitivity and social progress is for the better. Also, just because certain things weren't seen as offensive in the past by certain people doesn't mean they actually weren't. I'm sure they were still offensive to the people involved but they just weren't talked about.
