Default The 3 things that killed C4 BB and the 3 things that killed C5 BB

We all know that the three things that 'killed' C4 BB were the combination of Nikki being able to return and be eligible to win, the CBB5 racism row and then the BB8 all female launch which was mostly filled with 'fame hungry wannabees.' This resulted in the ratings decline over the last 3 years on C4 BB and resulted in C4 axing it.

After that, you could argue that BB had already been 'killed' - but for arguments sake BB14, CBB14, CBB15 did really well in the ratings after a worrying few years and then BB17 also improved in the ratings, providing evidence the show was building itself back up after Timebomb so C5 BB was doing 'okay' by it's low standards.

Then Bear comes along, behaves despicably, bullies majority of his fellow housemates and then wins the series. People decide to switch off. Intense rumours follow for an 'All Stars' series of CBB with big former names rumoured including Katie Price, Perez Hilton and Katie Hopkins (the trio were a fixture in C5's most popular series CBB15). The 'All Stars' line up for said CBB series instead includes names such as Jasmine Waltz and Coleen Nolan. People decide to switch off this series and not watch due to the disappointing line up. THEN the next civilian run of the show BB18 features a large number of 'civilians' who are actually not civilians. Many have featured on other television shows and have large social media followings and would be able to qualify for the celebrity version of the show. Many people decide to switch off - hence the low ratings.

SO IN SHORT - the 3 things that 'killed' C5 BB were Bear winning CBB18, CBB19 having a disappointing 'All Star' line up and then BB18 being filled with people who could have qualified for the celebrity show which already has 2 runs a year.

Thoughts?

Why do people always say that BB17 did well in the ratings, it was (until this series) one of channel 5's lowest viewed series. Maybe not consistently but the views dropped way down part way through.

I agree about whats killing the show. The only thing i will say in this January series was actually really good and from what i saw back then did really well too. It showcased that C5 can still pull off a decent theme for the show. I do worry about the show as i do have this odd feeling that its going to be announced after this years Cbb that they wont renew the contract.

I think BB15 is what played a massive role in killing C5 BB tbh. They were in a great position after BB14/CBB13 and then BB15 came along and ****ed everything up and it hasn't recovered since. BB16 was the final nail in the coffin.

I would agree, although I would argue it's been going downhill since BB16, none of the series after that have rated really well?

It’s the 3rd highest rated on C5. Considering there have been 6 series on C5 (not counting BB18), it did quite remarkable in ratings tbh

And the fact that BB16 went down to 1.4m and everyone thought that was the end for BB, and then the ratings go back up to 1.6m was exciting

BB17's ratings weren't even that good tbh?

Like they look impressive when following BB16's worryingly low ratings, but it barely outrated BB15 and that was seen as a flop in the ratings.

It averaged 1.59m

BB14 - 1.89
BB13 - 1.62
BB15 - 1.57
BB12 - 1.55
BB16 - 1.37
BB18 - 1.29

It is one of the better rating series.....

BB15 was only seen as a flop bc the previous year got 1.9m, so the ratings went down quite a bit

This does speak volumes tbf. CBB17 and BB17 seemed to be picking up the franchise and putting it back on it's feet. I remember all the comments on Twitter and FB saying people would turn off after Bear won, lots of my friends were excited for the AS vs NS idea when Perez, Bear, Steph etc. were rumoured but decided not to watch after seeing the cast, and a lot of the hardcore fans have been wanting normal HMs for years. Makes a lot of sense.

I definately agree about Bear winning, and then the falsely advertised lineup for both CBB and now BBUK have really not helped, so it's the one thing I think CBB20 deeply relies on to help it pick the whole franchise back up again.

So yeah if BB's future rests on a summer CBB airing after by far the lowest rated Civvi ever.. I don't see how it's going to survive

I mean the success of CBB20 relies on the cast after the last 2 series this year

Probably cos it costs a lot of money to produce compared to their regular 'Benefit Babes Boozed Up and Banged Up in Benidorm' they tripe out.

Also it's meant to be their flagship programme and it's getting outrated by all their benefits documentaries

Sadly many many things are killing off BB including complaints about show - the type of HMs chosen - lack of live feed (the live feed was what made BB so addictive when it started)

In the beginning we did not know what would happen next or what to expect now many many years later no live feed bad choice of HMs things have gotten far more vulgar over the years... so we want fights and controversy and what we get is often that topped with far too many please put your pants/top back on rude bits! and thats all it is a bunch of want-to-be-famous-for-doing-all-kinds-of-bad-things-on-tv youngsters without an inch of dignity for themselves whom 20-30 years from now will look back on what they did on BB and will stick their heads in the litterbox(sand) trying to hide their shame ...

Exactly, i remember it was in the press and everything last year. It didnt do well and was the lowest rated series because of that andrew guy going in in the first/second week and telling the house they were watching from a house next door completely ruining the theme of the series.

Oh are they not putting old housemates back in this summer now then? I know it was a rumour but it sounded good the January series was brilliant.

C5 BB died a painful, miserable death the day Helen ****ing Wood won the series.

Agree with everything here. Everyone was telling them that if Bear won they would never watch again, they should have used when he broke the mirror as a reason to eject him.
They shouldn't have bothered with the "allstar" element of CBB19, it would have done fine with just the newbies like Kim, Jess, Angie, Chloe etc.
The BB18 launch seems to have turned away many long term fans because of the amount of Z-listers. Like I love Chanelle but I wish they saved her for CBB.

Basically to save the show they need to make CBB20 a success. I think Salv's insider said that is it flops then it's getting axed. Then for BB19 they need to have more normal, everyday people.
